finally watched the hopkins vs calzaghe fight

Post by boxerbob »

firstly thanks to all on here who did the round by round posts...i was on nightshift so it really helped.

now there is no way calzaghe won that fight , the 2 judges that had hopkins only getting 111 points and 112 points were watching another fight.

i scored the fight 115-113 hopkins or 6-5-1 in rounds but with the 10-8 round in the first giving hopkins the 2 point win.

hopkins won the first 4 rounds...so he must have been 5 points up by this time?????....i then gave calzage the next 4 , but what clinched it for hopkins was the 10th which was very close and the 11th which i feel hopkins won easy.

i gave calzaghe the last round but scored the 9th even....even if gave the 9th to calzaghe he still loses by 1 point.

after the 4th , hopkins had a massive lead so he only needed 2-3 rounds to have it in the bag....can anyone on here say that between 5-12 that hopkins never won 2 rounds????

i think joe got lucky , at a push he won 6 rounds , still not enough to win....it got me thinking though...hopkins would have beaten calzaghe more easily if the fight was 3-5 years ago...10 years ago hopkins might have knocked joe out.

calzaghe is a good fighter but when hearing that he is the best brit ever is laughable....he barely got past an old hiopkins and now want to fight an old jones.

ps: id like calzaghe to take a few years off now...come back when hes 39-40 and fight pavlik

why....that what hopkins did when fighting calzaghe and he done great....personally i think pavlik kayos joe in 2-3 years time if that happened

when watching this site on sat night...some had joe winning close , some had hopkins winning close and even some had it a draw...so it was a close fight.

most in the states had hopkins winning by 1 points and the bbc had hopkins winning too.

personally i dont think the result really hurts hopkins legacy but i think it really raises questions on why joe has never fought anyone oin america sooner as an old hopkins gave him so much trouble.

the jones jnr fight will be a good one as jones is more active , personally again id like teh fight in the usa as it would test joe more.

he should though fight pavilik next year as pavilk is the big punching name on the up....i know pavilk is tied up till next year but i see no problem on fighting pavilk early next spring.

Yeah, I was surprised when he read all the Judges gave the 11th to Hopkins... so I viewed it again, and I can see why. It was a closer round than I thought.

Hopkins won the 10th for me, and the 12th was definately a level round. He outboxed Joe for the first minute (quite handily), and Joe came back, and the last minute they stalked.

Although ultimately it didn't cost him the fight, the complaining from the low blow cost Hopkins the 10th with the Judges..... cause I was surprised it was given unaminously to Joe - cause Hopkins definately controlled the last 2 minutes of that round.

i know he did but he shouldnt...bad decision.

calzaghe would have gotten kayoed by hopkins if he fought him 5-7 years ago

also another point.....for all on the board

i dont think calzaghe is a world class puncher at super-middle or light heavy....all of his hardest fight have went the distance

No, it was not. Calzaghe outworked him. You might think Hopkins should have won, but that is no reason to state that it was a bad decision.

How do you know? Calzaghe would have been fresher as well and I assume the fight would have been at Super Middleweight, which is Calzaghe's ideal weight division. So, I don't see why Calzaghe would get knocked out.

I don't think he puts a lot of his power into most of his shots. He has more power than he uses.

Precisely. This was a close fight, no way a robbery. Too many of the rounds were close, and Hopkins rarely initiated or maintained any aggression.

Also, Hopkins did himself no favours by holding constantly and bellyaching about imaginary low blows. The first was borderline and had no force, and the second wasn't even low.

I have to also say, that how come Cortez was so hard on Hatton for holding, yet he allowed Hopkins to hold pretty much at will. Hopkins should have just waved the action on rather than allowing Hopkins to take unofficial rests.

Calzaghe had very few opportunities to punch, as Hopkins would hold as soon as Calzaghe let rip.

Had Hopkins been less negative, he would also have undoubtedly shipped more punches, and over the last four rounds he was desperately tired.

Cortes allowed Hopkins to rather scandalously buy time, had he not done so, Hopkins would have been in big trouble, because he was open mouthed by the 9th.

I think the judges took a dim view of Hopkins shennanigans and his holding, and he paid the price.

I thought a draw would have been a fair result, but I also think a rematch would see Calzaghe win far more convincingly, as he adapted well from round 3 onward.

JC won the fight, no doubt about it, the early knockdown and the fact the Welshman took a few rounds to clear his head made my score close.
However the final two thirds of the fight was all Calzaghe's.
Hopkins fought like a journeyman, his tactics ended up being to survive and spoil, while just potshotting.
The two times he went down for phoney low blows showed he was desperate in the hope of getting points off and to gab breathers.
Joe did all the work and forced the fight wile the Americans main success was the fact home town ref Cortez allowed him to hold so much, and let him get awat with blatent misuse of the head.
How can anyone score the fight to a man who was so negative??
Calzaghe did not look good, but how can anyone look good against someone content to only spoil, no one looks good against Peter Buckley!
JC did what he had to do to win and all credit to him

I thought it was a very close fight and only scored it to Calzaghe by a round. I was surprised the next day when I looked on the Current Scene forum that has a strong US bias that the general concensus was Calzaghe deserved to get the nod. See the vote below

Hopkins or Calzaghe?
Hopkins
17% [ 23 ]
Calzaghe
82% [ 105 ]

Also scored it for Calzaghe. Hopkins odd counter in no way allows for a lcaim of victory. He didnt turn up to fight. I he doesnt seem to understand the rules of boxing. Calzaghe was aggressive, wanted to fight, threw more punches, landed more, landed a higher % of shots thrown and ultmiately did very very well to get up off the floor in the first round and win a decision in the US with US judges.

The punchstats say Joe clearly won the fight; though these are it is true unreliable - thouigh the margin was enormous.

I find it odd that so many brits are supporting Hopkins? Do we detect some self-hating inverted racism perhaps? This forum constantly puts down white fighters, Cal, Hatton whilst lionizing EG Steve Robinson (!), Lennox (perhaps deservedly) and Witter.

Or maybe it's just brits hating success???

I mean Hopkins was awful apart fromm the 1st round knockdown (and even he didn't pursue Joe after that.)

If everyone boxed like Hopkins noone would watch boxing...in fact noone would throw a punch as Hopkins just takes a half step back and waits...and waits and waits....

Hopkins was blatantly cheating on the so-called low-blow (I loved the way Joe pretended to fvck self-appointed prison tough guy hopkins.)

He was dirty, spoilt, hardly threw a shot though ultimately it was a clash of styles two counterpunchers always make a difficult fight.

But at least Joe tried to chase, tried to land.... though it is not his style.

Hopkins was dire and, in many ways cowardly - just trying to steal a decision....

It was a reletively close fight but Joe won a close but deserved decision.

Some good points made here. I think peoples interpretation might have had a lot to do with what coverage they were watching. I thought Setanta were very honest with there interpretion. However, from what I have heard about HBO they often a quite political with their scoring.

Boxing would be dead if everybody boxed like Hopkins. It is right for the agressor to be rewarded in sport. It is why they changed Football from 2 to 3 points for a win etc..

Hopkins always refers to himself as 'Old School'. I could not imagine his hero Marvin Hagler faking a low blow like that.

Think I gave joe the third, but it wasn't until the 8th that Joe DOMINATED a round.

I actually thought that the judges would give it to Hopkins at the end, becuase he made Calzaghe look so bad, but truth is, he made himself look even worse.

The play acting for me was unforgivable, especially given his own history of roughousing, and his prison talk bullshit. Hopkins definetly tried to cheat to get Joe deducted a point, and no doubt had that happened, he would have tried to get him DQ'd.

I do wish though that Calzaghe would take on someone other than Roy Jones after this, two senior citizens in a row is a bit cynical.

I almost hope Roy wins, because Joe is exploiting his name.

Tarver would be a better choice, but I wonder whether Joe fancies is after seeing how he dealt with Woods.

After the 2nd round, I couldn't give Hopkins another round till the 8th and one more after that. It wasn't close at all.

All that holding and single shots were just annoying to watch, Joe's volume was landing cleanly as well as on his guard when someones cheating like that It can be hard to land cleanly and makes the single shots more noticible to why some probably went for Hopkins.

Boxerbob.... glad you got the chance to see it, but I find the confidence of your assertions surprising.

My opinion - and many others - is that Calzaghe won.

Fights in America tend to be scored more on aggression, and I for one think it was spot on in this fight. Plus Hopkins did not help himself.

And can we please get over this misnomer that five years ago Hopkins would have beaten Calzaghe. Age hasn't effected B-Hops fighting style - didn't any of you see the Eastman fight!

And, even if he was sharper and more aggressive, I think that would have suited Calzaghe more. He is a natural counter-puncher - look at the Lacy fight.

Please Don't give the Punch Stats Again.

End of the Fight Hopkins looked the same as he did before the Fight.

Calzaghe Had a Big Cut on his Nose.

I gave it about 114-113 to Hopkins.

I will never ever know how Giampa gave it 116-111. Never.

I have seen the Fight Twice, i can only see Joe really wobbling Hopkins once, whereas Hopkins Wobbled Joe on several occasions.

I don't know, maybe it was Joe's Dance that impressed Giampa

you don't score fights on the look of someone's face, or who is wobbled more often.

I can understand how Giampa gave that score, even if I don't agree with it. There were about five rounds could have gone either way.
