Everyone will have an opinion on a fight that close. But I fail to see how that bout was controversial. Most of the US press have Calzaghe winning, FFS.
I would say Toney vs Tiberi was controversial. Or Emmanuel Augustus v Courtney Burton. Or Juan Urango-Ben Rabah. Fights in which many good writers had the losers winning between 8 and 10 rounds.
Joe is always one for statistics. 21 defences at 168, etc. So we can also use the SD over a 43yo against him, to stop him getting big-headed. However, Hopkins was still rated in many p4p lists, so it's still a good - if ugly - win.
The important thing is what Joe will do next. This is how history will jdge him. No point whining afterward sayig "I was underappreciated." The NARROW win over Hopkins should not pave the way to an easy cash-out. It should lead on to an American superfight with Pavlik. If they hype it right it'll be PPV and a sellout.
