Slick London-born cruiserweight Ola Afolabi raised a few eyebrows earlier this month with a 10-round destruction of the previously unbeaten Eric Fields in the States. The 28-year-old Afolabi, who fights out of California, came out of nowhere to beat a touted opponent who had flattened former IBF cruiserweight champion Kelvin Davis a few months previously. Afolabi, without a fight in three years going in, struggled early on but found his sharpness and dropped Fields three times before it was stopped. Afolabi also stopped former WBA cruiserweight champion Orlin Norris back in 2005 and, in 16 fights, has lost only to world class super-middleweight Allan "Sweetness" Green in an early career light-heavyweight affair (points).
He looks one to watch and has signed up with promoter Dino Duva, with whom his first fight takes place on June 13 in Scranton (remember John Conteh there?) against unbeaten Puerto Rican Francisco "The Wizard" Palacios, 14-0 (7). Palacios holds a stoppage over good Dominican Louis Azille, a two-time world cruiserweight title challenger, but takes part in his first 10-rounder.
