My missus accuses me of being a bad nerd for going on to boxrec but it’s the typical problem for most fans of marginalised sports: most of my mates love to watch a fight, most of them train in boxing/kickboxing or some other combat sport, and all love to stay up all night boozing for a big fight from the US, but most only have a fairly superficial knowledge of the sport (think Spud

For that reason I am forced to come on somewhere like here to discuss the merits, or otherwise, of regional undercard fighters and other nuances of the sport that most of my pals just couldn’t give a fook about.

Any internet forum is going to have its ‘anorak’ element, but needs must.

By the way, I think it was Frank Maloney who used to give out about boxing forum members being anoraks.

I think we are, but I don't care. We're such a minority nowadays that it's hard to have a decent conversation with someone about boxing.

Fcuk em. I heard that Abrams is no fan of the 'Net crowd, but so what? by going to the fights and buying his mag we keep him in beer and sweets. They shouldnt think they can piss us off.

I remember the mental midget once dismissing us all as anoraks.

But I think it mainly stemmed from when Dogmess was very popular and because most of us couldn't tolerate the level of debate on there, boxrec was given this tag.

Yes i think we are generally referred to as the nerds of the boxing world but as Matthew S rightly points out, the nerds buy the fight tickets, PPV's and magazines so they should tread a wee bit more carefully.

Internet writing has improved a great deal too in recent years and we are of course in a minority sport. How many times have you met someone who says "Yeah i love Boxing" and your sudden tinge of excitement is dampened after you mention a couple of names off the mainstream and they look at you like your...well...a member of the Boxrec Internet Forum.

I can see why people in the boxing business hate internet forums because us fans have a voice through it and can express our opinions whether they like them or not. I'm sure claude wasn't best pleased reading how he looked like a skeleton recently either!

I would rather be a "trainspotter" anyway, I need this site as I do struggle to talk boxing with someone whose limits are Calzaghe, Hatton and Khan.

I have one friend who I can talk about boxing with fully and he posts on here, and one or two who go slightly beyond the mainstream stuff but that is it.

They should also remember who ultimately funds the sport they try to run as a business.

I think most within the sport do. It concerns them, getting a feel for what the fans are saying must inspire a few articles here and there otherwise how would they know what the real fans want? It's all research.

It annoys me too. Everyone has an opinion and whether we have ever met so and so is irrelevant. If I have viewed a fighter I can say what I think is good or bad about him, regardless if i'm wrong or not.

I hate boxing the business. Love boxing the sport.

I sometimes sneak off upstairs and my girlfriend asks what the score is so I tell her I'm sending an email and she'll ask if someone on a forum is discussing there most 'favoured boring fights ever' and I just have to give my opinion (Harrison-Williams I, naturally).

I used to get a bunch of guys round for the fights but cannot be arsed these days, my girlfriend watches them with me, and is pretty damn good at reading a fight, and football matches, it is scarey. She maintains I'm a geek though, but her going on AOL chatrooms under a false name insulting people was just dandy!

I was surprised to read Boxrec described as the train spotting forum but I guess many other forums, especially US ones, seem to be full of people posing that eternal question: "Are you a knobhead?", "No, you are a knobhead". I'll take it as a refection of the fact we are a well-mannered bunch on here, plus the trolls have gone.

Saying that I'm taking a month off Boxrec after today. So I can then look at myself as a non-Geek, for a while at least.

Capthook called Boxrec the 'home of the Internet boxing masons', in a good sense
