RIP Gino Gelormino

Post by NYboxing »

Fatal fall for hardhat who was Golden Gloves boxer champ in '77

A Golden Gloves champ who had a short but impressive pro career was killed and a Manhattan officer worker was injured Tuesday in two more construction accidents.

The grim toll rose as construction union officials called for the abolishment of the embattled Buildings Department.

Gino Gelormino, 47, fell about 35 feet from the Triborough Bridge in the latest spate of construction accidents that has left the city reeling over lax safety guidelines.

Gelormino, who won the 1977 Golden Gloves subnovice championship fighting as a 112-pounder, was part of a crew doing rehabilitation work on the underside of the bridge approach. He died of multiple injuries at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
