Yes, in fact I think his prime was as a middleweight. Off the top of my head, I'd say he was probably a middleweight for about 8 years, maybe more. Even for a lot of his early fights at light-heavyweight he weighed about 165 pounds, so he really was a super-middleweight.

BTW, I have some highlights of his fights with Australian Ron Richards, which took place at middleweight.

BTW, Archie won and lost the California middleweight title against Jack Chase in 1943, about 7 years into his pro career.

Two years later he fought Lloyd Marshall twice... the fights were considered light-heavyweight fights, but both fighters really weighed under 165 pounds.
