Does anyone recall if Tunney and Dempsey wore gumshields in their famous fights?

Cap, I don't think so. But I don't have any proof either way in term of articles, etc.

As I recall, Ted "Kid" Lewis was the first boxer to use a mouthpiece circa 1913. I don't know long on it took for the idea to spread.

I was thinking they didn't either, but Jack Cavanaugh says in his book "Tunney" that they did. I'm a little wary of some of his history.
