Dont know if this has been done yet, but why did mayweather get the award instead of Pavlik?
Kelly Pavlik knocked out 3 world class fighters who had never been Ko'd before. Mayweather danced with De La Hoya for 12 rounds and Ko'd a smaller elite fighter from another weight class.
I had been watching Pavlik for a couple years before he burst on the world scene and what he did completely transformed him as a world class fighter. I mean, damn did you see what he did to Miranda?
Fighter of the Year for 2007
Re: Fighter of the Year for 2007
I thought Pavlik deserved it over Mayweather as well. Pavlik toppled a legitimate top middleweight contender and then THE top rated middleweight to become the #1 middleweight himself.
Going into this year, Mayweather was already considered a candidate for the #1 spot at welterweight, but neither of his fights really defended or consolidated that claim IMO. He fought the world's top junior welter at welterweight (and Hatton's credibility as a welterweight was very questionable following the Collazo fight), and DeLaHoya's status as a top fighter right now is based more on his name rather than what he's actually doing in the ring.
Mayweather probably got the edge in the voting because his fights were such big money events. But IMO, Pavlik's wins had a bit more meaning and significance, and were done in more impressive/convincing fashion.
