BOXING GYMS IN NORTH LONDON? NEAR HIGHGATE?

Post by overhand_right »

I was living in Wandsworth and trained at Earlsfield ABC for a little while earlier in the year, good gym, even if Sid Khan is a total loon.

Anyways moved to North London now, any action round there lads?

I'm getting on now -- 26! Do lads that old get amateur fights? I've pi#sed about and only trained off & on for years now so i doubt anyone would take me too seriously or invest much time in me, but still, want another run at it.

Does Timmy L still train people at Earlsfield?

St. Pancras Boxing club, Chalk Farm (right near Camden Town)

Same place big John McDermott trains. Its open to seniors Mon, Wed and Friday nights and sometimes Saturday morning. Easy enough to get to from Highgate, couple of stops down the Northern Line.

Other than Sid i didn't know anyones name.

There was a real old fella there training lads in the second room, two middle aged fellas training, a short squat burly black fella who always wore a bandana, and a big 'youngish' guy who looked in his mid-30s. They were set of coaches doing the rounds.

He had a pretty dramatic face off with this powerfully built black boxer who lost his rag for reasons i cant figure out whilst sparring some huge Samoan-looking fella. I was stood in the ring with no business sparring with such big guys but the stand off was more entertaining than the sparring.

Quality! Train alongside Big John, i could pick his brains on Danny Williams (assuming hes an approachable fella?)

Sound like the normal evenings i'd go anyways. When you say 'seniors', is that referring to age, or to experience?

Sid Khan did give me my amateur registration forms after a sparring sess, but he probably thought i was about 21 instead of 26.

I think there used to be a gym in Hampstead Heath than Bruno trained in. Went there as a kid - on one of the ponds/lakes.

Failing that, there's a boxing club in Hornsey Rise, down from Crouch End, towards Holloway. Blokes name is Enzo who runs it.

When I say 'seniors' I literally just mean anyone over 16/17 years.

There's people of all ages, all abilities - some people spar, some just enjoy a work-out, there's always new faces turning up.

Its a really good setup - nothing real formal: turn up, pay your money (£3 a session) and work-out.

I dont think youll see Big John, apparently he works out during the day - although I have seen Martin Power pop in and sell tickets for his various fights.

Hi mate, there's also Times ABC in Tiber Gardens, off York Way, between King's Cross and Islington. Great atmosphere.

You can most of these off the ABAE website if you navigate through the site.

Club Name: St Pancras Boys' Club
Address: 25 Talacre rd
N19 3LP
Telephone: 020 8968 4649
Contact Name: Steve Hoier, Secretary

Steve has been at St Pancras as far back as I can remember. Lovely fella originally from Oldham if my memory serves me. The club's between Chalk Farm and Kentish Town West tube stations.

Cheers for the info mate.

Would you know if its open sundays for seniors? I could do with easing myself back in with a weekend, rather than a hardcore monday sess..
