Kayes: Gavin withdrawl could be down to water retention

Post by Carbo »

After finishing my initial flourish of work in sub-tropical Moscow this morning, I thought "hey, what this forum needs is another Frankie Gavin thread."

I think it's worth it, though. Kerry Kayes, in an excellent interview in the Guardian, speculates that Gavin's withdrawal could be due to the effects of flying combined with cack-handed weight control efforts by the trainers out there.

Kayes says:

"I might be proved wrong but my best guesstimate is his failure to make the weight could be down to water retention. You know how your feet swell up when you take your shoes off on a long flight? That's down to water retention. It's basic stuff but, if I'd flown with him, I would have drained Frankie's system to get all that excess water out as soon as we got there. My fear is that they didn't do that and to clear the weight caused by the water retention they might well have got him to stop drinking. That's when you get real problems because if the body is not getting the fluids it needs then it holds onto the weight and the whole system is affected. As I say, I'm only guessing here but I can't see what else would have made him miss the weight when things were going so well with me."

Obviously, the idea of 'draining' Gavin sounds a little concerning, but Kayes earlier reaffirms the legality of his techniques.

Further, his theory seems to be corroborated by this quote from Terry Edwards:

"But Frankie was completely dried out. It got to the stage where, even if he had somehow managed to make weight in time, it was going to be detrimental."

Kayes says that the body won't shift anything if it's not getting its fluids, and here is Britain's ABA coach telling us that Gavin was 'completely dried out' to the stage where even competing would have been a health risk. This goes against everything I've heard Kayes talk about when it comes to weightloss for fighters, and sounds like another example of the stone age old wives tales approach to nutrition and conditioning that many in the boxing fraternity still appear to take.

What i can't understand is why Kayes was left off the plane to Macau if he had been such a great help beforehand.
It can't be down to costs, because even with paying Kayes for his expert advice and the costs in flights etc, its got to be better than ending up with Frankie being sent home.

I bet there are quite a few blokes in blazers walking round with the boxers who have no input whatsoever, and they get a trip to the olympics.
