Bradley and Billy Joe Saunders SPOILER!!

Post by scrap iron »

Just seen Bradley Saunders in his opening Olympic bout destroy his opponent in the first round with body shots. Absolutely brutal. You don't see many stoppages like that in amateur boxing. Billy Joe Saunders is through as well.

if you missed em catch replays on the bbc's olympics web site.

Billy Joe's fight:

This lad is the class of the British squad for my money - he has a really hard draw but I wouldnt put it past him to grab a medal.

Dunno if Bradley Saunders opponent was all that good though - crippled by 2 body shots very early on.

You wont get many easier fights then that at Olympic level.

Still, Bradley dispatched him with clinical efficiency. The team must be buzzing now after the first 2 days..

Billy Joe looked excellent, don't think he could of done much more. very hard draw for him, next up is the Cuban , then if Billy Joe beats him it should be the hard Thai boxer in the next round.
Plus both the Cuban got a bye in the first round, so will be fresh.
Confidence is everything though, and Billy Joe's has got to be sky high after that first fight.

Seemed to be alot of good welterweights about today, Johnson from the Bahamas looked immensly strong, threw alot of uppercuts, not something you see much in the Am's. I'd pick Johnson to beat the average looking Strets'kyy from the Ukraine in the next round

Bradley boxed very well. He has a tough draw but would be great to see him get a medal. He boxed my cousin Gary Barker in the ABA Semi-Final, and I knew from there he was special.

Good luck to him.

Billy Joe has beaten the Cuban before. If he beats him again he really could go all the way. However, it's no formality – Carlos Bantuer will know what he's all about this time. The winner of this could eventually win the gold.

Billy Joe did look pretty good, but I thought the other guy landed quite a few clean shots in the first couple of rounds that didn't get scored.

Wouldn't argue with that, especially as in modern day, computer scoring, the early shots are the most important. But Billy Joe was a more than worthy winner for me. Some of his punch evasion in the last round and a half was exceptional. He's going to be tough to beat.

Bill Joe was superb. Oozed class and made the Turk look ordinary. The referee could easily have given the Turk a standing count in the 2nd round.

Shame he's drawn the Cuban in his next fight. Good luck Billy Joe.

I meant don't look into that loss too much. They were probably working on something.

Was the result fair? BJ said on the BBC that the scoring wasn't there:

Saunders felt he boxed well, but bemoaned the scoring in Beijing.

"The points didn't go for me today," he said. "In the last round I knew I wouldn't get the decision unless I knocked him out. The scoring here is so bad for an Olympic Games. It's unbelievable.

"I felt my performance was exceptional, but I've had better days. I felt I should have had six or seven points for my body shots, but they're not scoring body shots. You might as well do fencing, not boxing, if they're going to do that."

It was the right result, for me both boxers had punches that were not scored. But the right boxer won.

One thing that is a shame is that when a British boxer loses, clearly the party line is for both coach and boxer to whine on about the points scoring. Its like when some pratty footballer claims his side lost because of the pitch (as if the other team didn’t have to play on it or something).

I saw the Jeffries fight live this morning, each round, and the points scoring was indeed poor. Long straight jabs square into the Colombian’s face, rocking his head back, and unbelievably – no score. However, it was much the same for the Colombian, who put in the occasional flurry of punches, one or two of which would be scoring shots through the guard, and again – no score.

The point is, it’s the same for both fighters. There is hardly some anti-British scoring going on.

Our boys that have lost have lost for one reason, and one reason only. They weren’t good enough.
