Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
Jones just doesn't punch enough or move enough anymore
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
It's at 175 lbs. http://www.boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=557798search wrote:The main question I have is will the fight be at 168 or 175? Seems like RJJ was talking about having the fight at 168. He weighed in at 169 for the Trinidad fight so I am confident he can get down to 168 and still be a force. Calzaghe didn't move up to 175 for nothing, he was having trouble at 168 himself so there are question marks over him getting down to 168 and being the force he was too.
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
Calzaghe just about beat a 43 year old man; Hopkins.
Hopkins, despite being 43 is still very good. passed his prime, but still good.
RJJ on the other hand seems a little lost, he is certainly passed it, nobody will doubt that, and at the same time he is no Hopkins, so he has not gracefully carried his skill with age.
I think it will be Calzaghe winning a pretty simple victory. A few years back, i would say RJJ winning by KO or UD easy, but RJJ needs to retire, more so than Hopkins. I fail to take this fight seriously

Just about? All Hopkins did other than a little knockdown was hold, fake low blows and fowl. There was no skill there.
Jones will just try to survive and lose on points.

It was a Dull fight. I think you will find it hard to get someone who thinks it was not.Max Molyneux wrote:Just about? All Hopkins did other than a little knockdown was hold, fake low blows and fowl. There was no skill there.

But Hopkins had Joe wobbled a lot more times than Joe had Hopkins wobbled. On top of the Early Knockdown, i personally felt Hopkins won it. Little knockdown? It was hardly a flash knockdown was it, it was a clean hit and Calzaghe was floored. Whether the low blow was real or not, i dont know, but Hopkins seemed adamant about it after the fight, and Joe even admitted to it. So that answers that.
I guess Calzaghe's work rate payed off, but even then it was embarassing seeing Calzaghe look helpless when on the offense.

I enjoyed it. It was a close fight with memorable moments.observer1 wrote:It was a Dull fight. I think you will find it hard to get someone who thinks it was not.
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
Nah it was a flash knockdown, he was up straght away. Probably a little shocked by it happening in round one in front of the US. And to be honest I dont think there where any points where Calzaghe was hurt. Hopkins had the odd success, but otherwise he did what he did best, hold and hold some more. Not to mention the cheating.observer1 wrote:It was a Dull fight. I think you will find it hard to get someone who thinks it was not.Max Molyneux wrote:Just about? I think RJJ is a lot more dangerous than Hopkins. Fast hands and in now way is he totally shot. he looked fine in his last outining
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
I'm gonna buck the trend and say Roy wins a close decision.
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
You're not alone there poncey, i've got a feeling Roy might take it as well. He's faster and more agressive than Hopkins (not hard I know), and he isn't as shot as some peolple would lead you to believe.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:I'm gonna buck the trend and say Roy wins a close decision.
Even if he doesn't win, he can keep it quite close.

Does anyone have any idea of tickets prices, or when they go on sale?
Can't find anything on google.

JC will box Rj's lugs off. Its going to make Calzaghe look like a boxing legend, but the only top fighters Joe has beaten have been years past there best. You cant blame him for this its just very good business sence, actually i cannot think of a boxer who has a better career money making record.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
I have to favour Calzaghe in this one, Jones is past his best - To be honest I would have picked Calzaghe over Jones 4 years ago, let alone now.
I personally thought the Hopkins fight was a comfortable win for Joe - Hopkins did a lot of what most of us thought he would do, and that is survive, while throwing the odd counter. Shame on Calzaghe for getting caught by those odd counters, but it wasn't a close fight in my eyes.
I actually think the Jones fight is going to be quite an entertaining fight - I suspect Jones will try and turn back the years with fast flurry's which imo will play straight into Calzaghe's hands.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
The problem for Jones is that he cannot maintain a high output any more, in fact, he never really did throw that many shots, but now he manages about 10 a round most fights.
If he can work hard enough to keep Calzaghe honest, he has a shot, but I suspect that Jones will spend most of the fight against the ropes being peppered with small but counting shots.

Thanks mate but they're the tout ones so they already know they're getting them to sell them on. I'd prefer not to fill a tout's pockets TBH.TerribleTerry wrote:On sale now.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Does anyone have any idea of tickets prices, or when they go on sale?

As far as I can tell through ticketmaster, his website, yadda yadda, there's nothing yet.
In fact I'm not sure the contract has even officially been signed yet (even though TV companies are announcing it).

A bit of human growth hormone, dye his grey hairs black again...
If Roy can fight for 7 rounds he could win a split. I personally don't think he can nowadays.
He is more popular in the judges eye's than old miserable Bernard.
With regards the weight, Joe can make 12 stone and is not that big at Super, let alone 175lb either. It just allows him breathing space that's all. If Roy can make 168lb that would be more impressive.
Im suprise Calzaghe has not tried to make the fight at 168lb as it would favour him far more than Jones, given that Jones has not seen 168lb for years and years.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
JC via late KO a la the Road Warrior unless RJJ goes into his shell and fights negatively
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe
Me, too. I can, however, see Roy scoring a couple of flash KDs which will tighten things up on the scorecards. If BHOP can deck JC, RJ certainly can with that (still) fast lead right. And we all know Joe has always been open to a right hand.Happy Slapper wrote:Spot on for me too...jamesmcdonnell wrote:The problem for Jones is that he cannot maintain a high output any more, in fact, he never really did throw that many shots, but now he manages about 10 a round most fights.

HBO, GBP and Calzaghe v Jones Jr Article
A great article here by Hauser on HBO, GBP and some interesting things about Jones Jr v Calzaghe when it was originally sheduled and the problems that have arose with the new November 8th date:

Re: HBO, GBP and Calzaghe v Jones Jr Article
Brilliant article. Hauser is outstanding. I love the simplicity if his style, but, more importantly, he's about the only investigative journalist in boxing, which is surprising considering the muck there is to rake around the sport.
Re: HBO, GBP and Calzaghe v Jones Jr Article
Hauser writes alot of sense
These statements sum up my feelings on the sport, if boxing is going to continue to progress as a sport fights like Cotto-Margarito have to keep being made (obviously this is mainly down to the boxers, "you can take the horse to water, but you can't make it drink")
"“Forget all the bullshit and phony events that HBO is into these days,” promoter Bob Arum said at the May 22nd kick-off press conference. “Boxing done right is the most exciting sport there is. This is two honest, hard-working, real fighters.” (re:Marg-Cotto)
Cotto-Margarito showed what boxing can and should be. Two elite fighters with exciting styles in the prime of their respective careers fighting each other in a competitive fight. - Hauser
The sport is healthier now that it was ten days ago because of Cotto-Margarito.
And boxing fans have served notice that they want to see more than good fighters. They want to see good fights. - Hauser

Re: HBO, GBP and Calzaghe v Jones Jr Article
I have just used the phrase "This point is a no-brainer unless you don't have a brain" on a particularly acrimonious conference call. I won the point and definitely owe Bob Arum a beer.

I think I'll go. Just trying to round a few pals up. I've never experienced an atmosphere as good as MSG.
