Aussies not doing well at Olympics
Aussies not doing well at Olympics
Shame to see our boys get beat in the first round with only Anthony Little making to through round one, I watched two Aussies last night - young 18 year old from Brisbane and Luke Boyd.
Both seemed to be getting no meaningful advice from the corner? chase chase? what about cutting the ring off?
Unfortunately the international team is made up of one third of the pool as League and Global boxers cannot compete so in some cases our best fighters are not even being considered for international selection.
To make matters even worse it appears that the team was preselected, and in some cases we are being represented at the Olymics by fighters who arent even the National Champions.
What a mess, and its only the fighters that suffer.

thanks for that Ross, i didn't understand up untill now the australian setup. It trully sounds like 'amateur hour'. Unfortunately it seems like another scenario where individual egos take precedence over the wellbeing of the sport.

Stephen Sutherland had a raw deal yesterday against the tunisian kid...the judges werent giving him any leaway...he was landing scoring shots that even ray charles wouldnt argue with...but the judges were saying no.

Why is boxing even at the olympics?
One guy sitting there with a button, determines who wins.

A panel of five judges decides which hits are scoring hits.Ultimateboxa2 wrote:Why is boxing even at the olympics?

Judges each have two buttons before them, one for each boxer, and they press the appropriate button when they believe a boxer delivers a scoring hit.

Yes you are correct he did land some very clean punches that did not get scored, but in fairness the same was happening, given a little less to the other lad, BUT even if all the clean hits that were missed were scored Sutherland was beaten very very easily.

Are you in Oz mate?
The sport is a joke, up in FNQ we have to fight league as there is no one else, if boys want to fight association then they have to travel nomrally to Brisbane or near by for fights. Sorry but we cannot afford to fly to Brisbane once a month for fights.
Read Angelo Di Carlos article in the Fist and it will help you understand the crap in ameteur boxing, we have blokes like Fred Mundbrury (who beat Paul Flemming 4 out of 4) who has to turn pro cause he cannot get to Assocuiation bouts. How good is Fred - Qld and National Champ with four or five fights as a pro.
Dallas & Lance Gostelow - brothers who were/are top pros but git shut out of the ameteurs.
At some point you would like that the benefit of kids would come into it but it never does its all ab out egos.
No common sense - but then again common sense is not that common.

Spot on Ross, I was going to mention Mundraby-The guy is a weapon, didnt know he beat fleming 4 times but watching his pro fights you can tell he wouldve been good as an amatuer, could have won a medal at the olympics for aus.
Alex Leapai comes to mind also, he was a global Aus champ and i could see him winning a medal at the olympics, doesnt have a good amateur style, but not many amateur heavyweights would be able to cop many of his bombs.
Plenty of other league and global guys who could be awesome.

Your post could be taken back to 1984 when Arthur Tunstall was in full flight in the boxing politics shenanigans departmenttoppity wrote:thanks for that Ross, i didn't understand up untill now the australian setup. yep, in Victoria. have never really followed the amo's so appreciate your knowledge on the subject. unfortunately this problem with ego's, and therefore lack of uniformity, is common to several minority sports.Ross wrote:toppity wrote:thanks for that Ross, i didn't understand up untill now the australian setup. i noticed a girl named Tunstall commentating (i think) at the olympics. I wonder if she is related to the old goose.bollox wrote:Your post could be taken back to 1984 when Arthur Tunstall was in full flight in the boxing politics shenanigans departmenttoppity wrote:thanks for that Ross, i didn't understand up untill now the australian setup. Learnt alot about the amateurs in this country this last week or so.Farkin politics.
As for Sutherland-thought he was well beeaten BUT crying out loud.how many shots did he land and not get scored.I counted A FEW for the tunisian(who it seems was scoring with body punches)but the judges were well in his favour. Crap crap crap.

Re: Aussies not doing well at Olympics
god topp, we have it coming from both sides....ah well load up some more bullets.
all south australia owes its existence to the fact that tasmanians can swim.

Re: Aussies not doing well at Olympics
i just read that pitt got done on points tonight.
Re: Aussies not doing well at Olympics
most species on earth progress FORWARDS as time goes by.They improve. They learn new skills, improve genetically, improve physically. Then there is the opposite progression ie BACKWARDS as well evidenced by the victorian species. Using your tasmanian statement it amuses me that even the taswegians are smarter than victorians-they would rather swim several hundred kilometeres more to SA to save themselves from regression swimming to victoria.
:P

Re: Aussies not doing well at Olympics
The politics have been ridiculous, but to a certain degree (ignoring the global/league/association debate) agree with some of the boxers being given a 2nd chance to compete at the Olympics via the qualifyers (ie: Jarrod Fletcher) - he seems to be a world class amateur and arguably the best MW in the association but due to injury missed the National Titles.
I don't agree with the whole "box off" arrangement that Di Carlo's letter complained about, but I don't see any problem with the AUS1 & AUS2 teams competing at the Oceania qualifying tournament.
While there's been some bullshit thrown about in this issue, I also can't help but think there's a certain degree of personal grudge from Di Carlo because his son didn't make it, no matter how many times he says that has nothing to do with it.

If Di Carlo has a personal grudge and thats what it takes to fix up the mess then so be it and boxing in Australia will be better for the most important people involved - the boxers.

We should just send Haumono, Kickett and Mundine in there under a disguise.

I'm not neccessarily saying it's a bad thing he's got a grudge (in this instance at least), if it gets it fixed that's great - shame it took a man with a grudge and a mission to do it. I was just making the comment really.Ross wrote:
