Well it is big new's as we've now lost all our main medal hope's in:

Joe Murray - Bantamweight (-54kg)
Frankie Gavin - Lightweight (-60kg)
Bradley Saunders - Light Welterweight (-64kg)
Billy Joe Saunders - Welterweight (-69kg)

Still in or yet to box

Khalid Yafai - Flyweight (-51kg
James DeGale - Middleweight (-75kg)
Tony Jeffries – Light Heavyweight (-80kg)
David Price – Super Heavyweight (+91kg)

Can only see Price getting a medal now which would be a bad enough considering people were really talking up our hope's of 3 or 4 medals at bronze or above and if we didnt get any that'd be a disaster going into the 2012 games

Just reread that and it's abit harsh, harsher than I meant it to sound anyway, my apologies Ex.

I thought I may bump into the result, but I started to get my hopes up when all the threads were marked with spoilers and it got to the afternoon.


I thought the scoring in the third round of B J Saunders fight was shit, I thought he had a good case for at least 5 unscored points which would've meant he'd have gone into the final round up, but that's amateur boxing.

plus BJS got a rock hard draw, beat bronze world medalist then lost a cuban

I think that's a stupid coment to be honest. As sweet science said, qualifying is an achievement in itself and if you want proof of the success of the funding.......

Obviously we aint Cuba or the old USSR yet, but we're making progress. Good to see our lads training like pros to compete against the other super powers of amateur boxing who've been doing the same for decades!!

You are aware that other nations train as well, yes? Our training in Sheffield is nothing compared to the Cuban system, were kids are groomed from their schooldays. Britain is hardly the only nation to fund their amateur boxers.

What exactly were you expecting? Every one of our fighters to piss it, because they've finally got some decent funding? As others have said, getting 8 boxers qualified (3 of them world championship medalists) is outstanding considering we could only manage one fighter 4 years ago.

Too right.

Despite going out Billy Joe Saunders has confirmed himself as the star of the GB boxing team (well, at least those who managed to box )

He can do it all and his style will convert very well to the pros. No disgrace in losing to the Cuban - he is a good fighter.

Cant see the point in him stopping amateur for 4 more years though. This 'fencing' style of points scoring boxing, where body shots and combination punching count for very little, can only detract from his development into the pros long term. The two sports are becoming like chalk and cheese..

Go pro now or maybe leave it a couple of years until he is 20 but either way he is going to have a massive impact on the pro ranks when he turns in his vest.

I just get a little piss sick of all the excuses though. They have largely failed – and one tool didn’t even make the weight. End of story.

For the £5m they've received (compared to other Olympic sports), their performance has been pretty poor/pathetic.

He sounds just plain daft there. Rather than waste any more of my money, and your money, I’d rather he spent the next 4 years doing community work to pay it all back. I can handle our athletes not winning, but I can’t abide those that couldn’t care less that they lost.

Whomever is in charge of British Amateur Boxing needs to resign pretty quickly I would suggest after this Olympic "performance".

To put it into perspective, Olympic diving receives a small fraction of that money and Britain has only received one more medal in the last two Olympics than diving.

Like you say, I have no problem when fighters try like BJ and JM, but with one not being able to make the weight and another saying comments like that, you have to wonder whether ABA boxing is the right place to spend that kind of money.

It's a shame as it might have screwed it up for future generations, but UK Sport will see the return they've had for their investment and might change their minds.
