Mathews signs up to Haye's camp
Derry Mathews
Mathews (r) is now looking for the British title

Liverpool featherweight Derry Mathews has signed a three-year contract with David Haye's Hayemaker Promotions.

Mathews first fight for his new team is a final eliminator for the British title against unbeaten Martin Lindsay in Sheffield on 20 September.

The former WBU world champion, 24, told BBC Radio Merseyside: "I want that British title.

"The deal is unbelievable and Hayemaker Promotions are going to bring big things for me."

As part of Mathews's deal, all of his fights under Hayemaker will be televised by Setanta Sports and he will fight on the undercard of some of David Hayes fights.

The Liverpudlian added those were key factors in his decision to sign with the new promotional company.

"He [Haye] has promised me that I'm going to be on his undercards.

"I believe he's going to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

"To sit in a room with him a couple of weeks ago and the deal he threw at me was something I couldn't refuse."

Great news for fight fan: Mathews v Lindsay should be a stormer.

I am backing the Irishman to step up to the plate and give Derry a shellacking.

Good to see Hayemaker promotions making real fights from the off.

I would be more likely to pay to watch this fight on TV than I would be to pay for the next Khan farce..

SN take note.

I hope Mathews doesn't have a verbal/telepathic contract with Warren. We'll never hear the end of it.

I think Dirty Derry is going to find it pretty hard from now on. He has a lot to prove.

I think this fight makes a clear statement by Hayemaker.
Both are signed to Hayemaker - and in their first fight under that promotional banner face off against each other in a do or die fight domestically.
Riddick - nothing wrong with making a point domestically.
Not every fighter can be a World Champ.
Well, maybe they can if you've got the WBU to deal with ......

He's fighting on 20-09-08 - work it out for yourself.
It's a bit obvious !

Martin Lindsay is well up for the fight. I was speaking to him last week and he was gutted when the Appleby scrap fell through (due to his bad tooth) but he wants another crack at Appleby in the future. This should be a good one and hopefully a sign of things to come from Hayemaker.

:D

I think you will find, in the terms of the contract (Franks copy) that Derry doesnt actually need to sign the contract, as long as the contract is drawn up on a day with a 'y' in it.

He's got it all sewn up, old one-lung.
