DeGale Spoiler
Re: DeGale Spoiler
4-1 up after round 2. Warming up nicely after a quiet first round.
Re: DeGale Spoiler
8-3 final score. To beat the quality of opponent that well was impressive.

He did well eh. I'll look forward to his fight with the Irish fella in the semis.
Re: DeGale Spoiler
Absolutely stunning. I backed Artyev at 8s pre-tournament but don't mind losing a few quid after watching that. James was superb. That's the American and former a Olympic champ dusted in four days. Nice work old son!!!!

Re: DeGale Spoiler
Two cracking GB v Ireland clashes in the semi finals now.
I am picking Egan and Sutherland to win through but anything can happen at this stage in the Olympics - great stuff!

Re: DeGale Spoiler
Although the Sutherland match is just what annoys me about the Amateur system. If that was a pro fight - then Sutherland would have lost.
I thought even with this system the scoreline flattered Sutherland (not enough to lose) but he just covered up way to much to win a round if it was like pro scoring. Never thought I would see an Olympic medalist who can't jab.

Boxed really well, and though Sutherland did as well I'll plump for DeGale.

Re: DeGale Spoiler
I agree with this, the other guy was a better fighter and I thought he picked up some good shots on the outside. Was cose but I agree he'd have nicked it. That said, he's through, congratulations to him. He was very gracious and sporting in his interview.stujones wrote:Although the Sutherland match is just what annoys me about the Amateur system. Excellent performance from Degale ![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
Re: DeGale Spoiler
Oh yes, absolutely. He's taking advantage of the point system well - can't fault it... just as a fight fan I find it frustrating. It reminded me of the Yank who was favourite for Gold at the Super Heavyweight in Sydney but lost in the finals of the US championships. He relied solely on a tremendous high guard and the other guy making the odd error. I think he was 10 seconds from making the trip to Sydney but the other American, who did badly in the Olympics, caught him twice in the dying seconds.
It will be close between him and Degale - I'll be rooting for Degale who is the more talented with the better pro potential. I think had the Sutherland fight been a pro contest it would have been 3-1 to the other guy.

While maybe true Sutherland only fought like that to manipulate the scoring system, it's not how he normally fights.stujones wrote:Oh yes, absolutely. Paddy Barnes is also using somewhat of a turtle defence aswell and it was noted by the panellists on RTÉ that the Irish coaches and boxers have been looking at the scoring system used in this Olympics(which has been far more cautious than most tournaments in the past) in order to achieve the best results.

Re: DeGale Spoiler
Dismal stuff isn't it.
From here it looks like DeGale could fight 247 contests in a week if thats the limit of the exertion in the Quarters.
He was my dark horse to surpass his more supported team-mates and I'm pleased for him and Jeffries and Price, but I've found much of the bouts a real turn off.

DeGale reminds me of Haye in his post fight interview today, very cocky and speaks his mind out loud, then again he was excited and ampt up!

The BBC commentators were really poor yet again.
Props to Sutherland for getting this far, and I like him as a fighter, but he seemd to score a few points with the inside of his glove and god knows how his opponent only managed to get 1 point on the board!
Looking forward to the semi-finals now.
I will pick Egan and Degale to make their respective finals. Degale doesn't have the best record against Sutherland but he has the ability to beat him.
