JAMIE MOORE will finally challenge European light-middleweight champion Zaurbek Baysangurov at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena on Friday September 26.

The Salford hero was due to challenge the world ranked Ukrainian last December, but Baysangurov (19-0) pulled out with a damaged nose 72 hours before the fight.

When promoter Frank Maloney rescheduled the bout unlucky southpaw Moore (30-3) was forced to cry off when he damaged a shoulder which required career saving surgery.

Moore, 29, insists he is as good as knew after going under the knife and having two warm-up fights over the summer.

He said: “This is the fight I’ve been waiting for and is my launch pad to my ultimate goal of challenging for the world title.

“The fight I dream about is Oscar de la Hoya, but realistically my chance wont come until next year and he may well have retired by then.

“Boxing is all about dream fights and I’m entitled to have one.”

Chief support will be English super-bantamweight champions Mark Moran’s (10-0-1)first title defence, against ex-British and European champion Esham Pickering (33-7).

Salford light-middleweight star Jamie Moore makes a mandatory (and overdue) challenge for the prize European title held by unbeaten Russian banger Zaurbek Baysangurov at Wigan's Robin Park Arena on Friday, September 26.
Southpaw Moore basically earned his chance when he took out Brummie Matthew Macklin in 10 fantastic rounds in Manchester in 2006 but has been largely kicking his heels since and had to watch Baysangurov, a pro since June 2004 (Moore turned in 1999), win the European title with a decision over tall Frenchman Hussein Bayram in Germany last year. Baysangurov, who flits between Germany and eastern Europe for his fights, only just scraped it but defended this year with stoppages of Moldovan Ivan Gontsa and rugged Ukrainian Roman Dzuman (known on these shores) in truer reflections of his hard-hiting worth.
Dzuman had never been stopped before. He was down twice.
Baysangurov, 19-0 (14), initially courted the headlines when he climbed off the floor in the first round to punch out a wide 12-round decision over world class and vastly more experienced Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio in September 2006. Still only 23 and ranked WBC No. 8, the former amateur star from Kiev in the Ukraine is chiselled, quick, heavy handed and a great prospect - a Kostya Tszyu in waiting, as someone described him - but obviously, he's not the finished article and he loves a tear-up and thus leaves himself open. One wonders, however, if he might just 'young man' the 29-year-old Moore.
Baysangurov is genuinely improving while Moore may have found his level at the top of the domestic pile. Solid, punishing, measured, Jamie went over old ground by stopping Wolverhampton's lanky and cagey Andrew Facey in 11 rounds in defence of his British light-middleweight title last October, a man he had thumped in seven in 2003. It was his eighth British title fight (seven wins), and he relinquished soon afterwards. He extended his latest winning run to 10 with a routine stoppage of Belfast's Ciaran Healy in three rounds last month.
On home turf Moore will never have a better chance of lifting the big belt, but everything considered, one has to side with the vaunted Baysangurov.

This will be the first test of Sports Network (os is is just allegedly's!) renewed relationsip with Sky.

Surely from a boxing fans point of view it's a no brainer in terms of preferring to watch Moore V Basangurov with Moran V Pickering for support or Marsh V Dean with the Walsh chavs for support.

Interesting to see who blinks first here.

JAMIE MOORE has suffered a devastating blow after European light-middleweight champion Zaurbek Baysangurov pulled out of their showdown in Wigan on September 26.

The unbeaten Russian has sent a medical certificate to the European Boxing Union’s office in Rome claiming he is injured and will not be fit enough to defend the title against Moore.

The Salford fighter’s camp are now demanding that the Russian is stripped of the title and the next available contender challenges Moore for the vacant title at the earliest opportunity.

His co-promoter Frank Maloney has protested to the EBU and is confident that Moore will face a new opponent for the vacant European crown in November.

Moore (30-3) said: “I’m devastated that the fight isn’t happening. I can’t believe it.

“I’m hoping my management team get him stripped and that I can finally get an opportunity to challenge for the European championship.”

Moore’s manager and co-promoter Steve Wood said: “We’re hoping that the EBU will act immediately and make a match for the vacant title between Jamie and the next available contender.”

Moore, 29, knocked out Esau Herrera and Ciaran Healy in summer warm-up contests, and has been training at Oliver Harrison’s gym for several weeks preparing for the fight.

Wood added: “Jamie will not be having any more warms ups because he needs a meaningful contest and with Frank Maloney and Sky Sports we hope that is going to happen before the end of the year.”

Because of Baysangurov’s injury claim, the promotion at Robin Park Centre on September 26 has now been cancelled.

All ticket holders can claim refunds at the point of purchase.
