MIDLANDS WORKING CLASS HERO

RENDALL MUNROE could be Britain’s next boxing star to challenge for a major world title.

The Leicester dustman makes the second defence of his European super-bantamweight title against French based Armenian Arsen Martirosian at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre on Friday.

And if the 28-year-old comes through this stiff test he hopes to face Bernard Dunne in November if the Irishman accepts the offer which is on the table.

His promoter Frank Maloney is also looking towards Canada’s IBF champion Steve Molitor, and is confident Munroe can become his fifth major world champion.

Maloney has already expertly steered Lennox Lewis, Paul Ingle, Scott Harrison and David Haye to world title glory.

And he says: “I believe Rendall can become one of Britain’s most colourful and exciting world champions.

“He is a boy who would never forget his roots and knows how much hard work he has to put in to achieve his ultimate goals.”

Munroe upset the odds when he shocked Spaniard Kiko Martinez earlier this year to become European champion, and few would now write him off against any opponent at 8st 10lb.

Maloney added: “We have made Dunne an offer after all the noises he has been making but all we are getting are excuses right now.

“We will wait and see. If we do not get an answer by the weekend we will look elsewhere, but first of all the fighting dustman must bin Martirosian or else he will be back on his dust round on Monday.”

Also in action on Friday’s talent stacked 12-fight bill are Ricky Hatton’s younger brother Matthew and Britain’s number one lightweight hopeful John Fewkes.

The Dunne fight would be interesting if they can lure him over and I'd stongly fancy Rendalls chances of keeping the title, there's no immediate rush on the Molitor clash IMO (he's a class class act).

Isn't Michael Hunter active again? If he's coming back at Super-Bantam that's be a nice clash of styles

I know Rendall's 28 and should be looking for a title shot but he should clear up the euro scene first....superbantam is a tough division - not a weak world champ out there and molitor would be a tough ask - he should make as much money as he can with his euro title before dropping it for a world title shot. But Molitor looks like he's gonna unify with Cellabaro anyway - so it will be a while til he becomes availible to fight again. But Rendall's story is a heartwarming one and incidently I might start having my haircut at the place that sponsors him!(my own barber at racked up his prices).

He is 2 fast, 2 accurate, 2 well schooled for any of our lot at the moment.

Molitor is a well kept secret. Come November when he faces, supposedly, Caballero (sp) he will be no longer.

Top draw, rounded fighter. Cute, well schooled and prepared to box, bang and move. Good fighter.

Remember him handling Boothy with so much ease he marked himself down in my book as a real, proper prospect.

The book is yellow with pre-punched hole for those with a stationary fixation.

Even though I agree on Molitor's ability, I would hesitate to write off the fight with Caballero as a foregone conclusion. Caballero is a strange fighter who looks woeful against lower opposition and makes us wonder what all the fuss was about, but when he gets a challenge he can deliver the goods. Plus, he is freakishly tall for the weight and is probably more effective than first appears.

On the Munroe score: I would like to see him fight Dunne before he moves onto world level. In fact, whether as a final Euro defence or even a world title eliminator (although Bernard would likely have to prove himself again before that sort of chance) I think it would be a real litmus test for Rendall Munroe and could tell us whether he could cut if on the world stage or not.

MIDLANDS GOT THE X-FACTOR





PROMOTER Frank Maloney believes the Midlands is the new hotbed of British boxing.

London dominated domestic boxing in the seventies, eighties and part of the nineties before Manchester ripped the crown from them through the likes of Steve Foster Sr, Carl Thompson, Ricky Hatton, Michael Gomez, Anthony Farnell, Steve Foster Jr, Jamie Moore and most recently Amir Khan.

Maloney has been one of boxing’s leading lights for more than 20 years and promoted more than 500 shows.

And he believes the current scene in the Midlands is set to become British boxing’s new capital.

Maloney has promoted three times in the region recently and returns to Nottingham on Friday where Leicester’s Rendall Munroe defends his European super-bantamweight crown against French based Aremenian Arsen Martirosian at Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre.

He believes Midland lads Munroe, Scott Haywood, Kevin Concepcion, Jason Booth, Andy Bell are Kevin Hammond are the future of boxing.

There is also Brummie Frankie Gavin who is expected to turn professional after his Olympic weight making debacle.

Maloney says: “The way things are going I am having to look for a bigger venue if the Munroe story continues to grow.

“I expect to promote least 40% of this year’s shows in the midlands.

“I also find the fan in the area are very knowledgeable and watch the whole cared instead of other fans around the country who follow one particular fighter.

“I have a great working relationship with the Shinfield’s who train the cream of the crop and my matchmaker Jimmy Gill, who hails from Nottingham has forgotten more about boxing than most people know.

“2008/09 is a period that could see the Midlands becoming the UNDISPUTED champion of Brit boxing.”

I recorded Steve Bunces boxing hour yesterday and watched it last night, Michael Hunter sent a message into the show saying he wants to fight Munroe. It'd be a cracking fight IMO

Munroe is really filling into his EBU championship and appears to be getting more accomplished as he racks up the title defences.

With his dedication and Maloney's guidence, there's no reason why the big fights won't come along in 2009. In the meantime it's great to see Rendell proving himself as the European champion.

Did well to win, what a tough bastard his opponent was. Good luck to Monroe who is back on the bins Tuesday. Lets hope he gets some big fights and big money soon and doesnt need a day job. I really like him.

Good performance against an opponent who was unknown, he was a tough bastard who started like whirlwind, but Munroes superior conditioning and boxing ability brought him through the fight and past a potential banana skin

Well the Matirosian fight was a mismatch on paper but Munroe made it hard work for himself so it ended up being a decent scrap.
Yes Matirosian was extremely tough, but he was also extremely crude and limited and had terrible balance.
Had Munroe boxed to his capabilities he could have stopped that guy in 6 or 7 rounds having barely been hit.

He should of boxed him from range using his height and reach and pepper the little Armenian with shots while using good movement to stay away.
Instead he stood in front of Matirosian for long periods and gave him stupid opportunities to counter.

Matthew Marsh would of beaten Munroe last night.
