Abrahams to tackle PPV issue

Post by doctorboxing »

Front cover of this weeks boxing news - a big pic of Amir Khan with "Is he worth it?" as the headline.

Im glad BN have eventually decided to tackle the issue - although one day before the fight is not going to make much of a difference to the PPV buy rates. I really hope Claude does let everyone know the negative reaction to this and is not afraid to have a go at Warren for this sham. Maybe it would have been done earlier if Claude was working, who knows?

Sorry, but too little too late IMO. A reactive response to the (internet forums) disgust at it not being raised before?

If they have reconsidered hiding away from the issue and will now tackle it head on because of the disgust shown here and everywhere else, then I think it is a positive thing that should be applauded. In the same way people will still buy the Khan PPV, most people would still buy BN whether they discussed it or not.

The fact that they will shows that the views of the reader are important to them in some degree. How important is the big question now? I guess we'll find out tomorrow... I won't be holding my breath on the words "outrage" or "disgrace" featuring though

Maybe Claude won't use the words "outrage" or "disgrace" because he doesn't think it is?

I think words such as "potentially short-sighted" are far closer to what most people involved in boxing would think.

More proof that Boxing forums run the show  I've had Haye on the blower to me all week asking me for advice. I think I've got him sorted though so expect an announcement on his next opponent fairly soon, that reminds me I must give Wlad a call to see what he's doing next July 8)

Well Done Boxing News!!

Might not do much this time round - but next time?

Bunce'y said along the lines that Warren had to do it ppv because kahn was asking for so much money. He would'nt fight on terrestrial tv for 150k. Dont know how true it is but if it is does that mean all Kahn's fights are gonna be ppv. Warren also said he had to shift 250,000 PPV buys to make everyone happy.

I believe that Khan's lot are pushing for more ££, and Warren has no choice but to keep them happy and headline Amir on PPV. It sucks especially for the avid boxing fans, Amir's people need to realise that Amir can earn top bucks when he reaches the truly meaningful bouts, but at this bullshit, i find it outrageous.

Khan basically sums up his own PPV headliner!

The fight is being billed for some obscure wbo intercontinental belt - I thought SKY had learnt from this load of shite before.

Didn't they say as much when they fell out bed with Warren?

No, hence the brackets. Do you not think its a reaction to the dismay at it not being raised in the warren intervieW?

I know you're of the opposite opinion completely, KG, but I do think forums have some influence. The lads on editorial will have been talking about the reaction here and elsewhere for sure.

Boxing forums are a direct link for the powers that be to catch a view of boxing opinion from Joe Bloggs - Whether that be Boxing news, Sport Network or anyone else.

You can rest assured they are browsing here on a regular basis.

i wouldn't imagine abrahams or anyone else at BN addressing the Khan PPV issue will have any effect whatsoever on the PPV sales

the kind of people who will buy Khan/ Hatton PPV's aren't often the ones subscribing to our little niche-interest trade paper IMO.

lol, classic. This guy's no good, he's fought nobody, and I'll beat him easily. But still I want you to pay £15 to watch me fight him.

Claude makes arguments for both sides. He doesnt object to PPV, but does question the quality of the bill... Indeed the quality of the bill (which he makes clear is down to injuries) is his biggest bug bear, not the fact Khan is a prospect on PPV before his time. Instead he makes the argument (same as SKY) that Khan is into the bigger stage of his career and points out the pro's and con's of Warrens move.

Warren argues "it was the only way to get the deal done".

He addresses it in a non-confrontational way. The whole 'Fighting Talk' is dedicated to it and he says that the issue has 'fans up in arms' and discusses the wisdom of it/justification for it. Brings up Don King, De La Hoya, football on Sky etc.

I can see that Warrens had to put him on PPV to generate enough cash to pay him, but it seems abit short-sighted to me and a BIG risk for both Frank and Amir.

If Warrens having to pay AK a small fortune is there going to be much money around to lure decent opponents over here? It doesn't look like it IMO going on his first effort.

I suppose we'll know alot more of how things are going to go when we hear what the PPV figures for this fight were like. Will Amir still be so popular when he's not on terrestrial TV and when you've got to pay another £15 for the privilege? As always Time Will Tell!

What if the PPV figures are crap where does that leave Amir and Frank, I can't see Frank being impressed with making a loss everytime AK fights and poor PPV figures would leave even less money in the pot for the opponent.

I think hat Buncey (yes I do listen in between the hyperbole) got it spot on last night when he said that Khan’s people priced him out of terrestrial tv - demanding.more than the bill warrants. The only way that the bill could be paid for is going PPV – if it hits then Khan is justified in his excessive claims and if it doesn’t he will have to be more realistic about how much he should be paid for his next fight. It does make me wonder how much he getting for this fight.

I guess it’s down to the casual ‘celebrity’ fan whether this PPV is justified.

I hope to god this forum has no influence what so ever, not because the posters here dont know their onions, but i do keep having to bring this up:

Hatton - Lazcano, 55,000 paid, great night had by the people i know who went there (No i wasnt there) yet on this forum it was a joke of a fight, looked down on with a slight sneer by self styled hardcore

Why would you listen to a hardcore of 25 people who are so far out of touch with the "reality"?

Not that i've ever had any grasp of reality
