Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
As I argued at the time, turning down Khan for 40k was a terrible decision
Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
I guess I just found it a bit hard to believe as I've not seen either boxer but Fewkes has been talked about waaaaay more than Gethin.sockdolager wrote:What's with the ?

Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
Gethin came to the fight hungry and fit.
The last thing Fewkes was, was hungry...

Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
I don't know what the hell was up with Fewkes. It must be a lack of motivation really - first he didn't make weight, then after the 2nd he didn't want to know. Oh well, I won't moan at the chance to see Murray v Gethin - Murray stops him early for me though.
Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
Whoever wins that fight definitely deserves a chance at Khan, provided he stays unbeaten.Dioufy wrote:I don't know what the hell was up with Fewkes. Fewkes was clearly hungry, as he ate leather all night.TerribleTerry wrote: The last thing Fewkes was, was hungry...

Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
A bit of a 'dime bar' moment turning down Khan wasn't it. Thought it was at the time and thats been confrmed by the events of last night
'Tomorrow is promised to no-one'
I hate all of this' you should build the fight up' nonsense. In some cases it can work( Haye v Big Mac) but boxing is one sport where victory is promised to nobody
Lose to Khan, earn much more money, noone cares, but giving him one or two thing to think about means that should keep your name hot. If you beat him, youwill be the dragonslayer and gain an instant national profile
Lose to Gethin..............

He didn't go hungry the week of the fight. Weighed-in 3lb over and lost about 2lb.Gray-Fox wrote:Fewkes was clearly hungry, as he ate leather all night.TerribleTerry wrote: The last thing Fewkes was, was hungry...
I hear there was a fall out with Glyn Rhodes over his weight, but one of the Sheffielld fellas on here might know more.

Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
I'm stunned, totally stunned.
Glyn will be inconsolable, and he'll need a very very wide berth for the next few days.
I feel for him more than the ginger fireball.
The time he's dedicated to this kid (and to be fair the loyalty shown in return) is rare in this modern era.
I am very nervous about the future on this showing and the events leading up to it.
That's how hard this business can be if you take the slightest of anything for granted.
One minute high potential earnings and the next British Champ (potential) to a failed English Champ challenger.
Snakes and ladders.

Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
Shame, but as others have said, it was a bad move to turn down that Khan fight - I was one of the anoraks who argued he should have taken the fight.
You have to take your chances in this game.

Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
as someone so eloquently said...tomorrow is promised to no one. i think fewkes suffered from his peri-fight depression due to the fact that he had a live opponent in front of him and that the title was no longer on the line, due to his own dietry innadequecies. fail to prepare..then prepare to fail !!!
Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
Well I like to build a fight to as high as earning potential as possible.... but only when everyone can see the ability is there.
Fewkes is good, but don't think he is ever going to be a world champion... Khan has more potential but there are geniune doubts there also. So I would love to have seen the fight now. Same with Murray.
Haye vs Mac was great, but then Mac was a champ and Haye looked world class. Glad it happend when it did as opposed to a WBO title defence for Mac.
The Light Middles a few years ago should have fought each other - cause none looked world class.

Quite the contrary, TT (if you mean it literally). He was like death warmed up because of trying to do the weight. Had absolutely nothing in his legs.TerribleTerry wrote:Gethin came to the fight hungry and fit.

Rhino's post sums things up completely.
Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
Firstly, Fewkes would have been left with about £15k from fighting Khan which is more a case of principle, unlike Mike Gomez who got about ten times that and isn't even a Lightweight. That's what the beef was.
With regards the fight itself, I was ringside and spoke to 3 pro boxers afterwards (one who'd fought and two watching) and they all basically said that Fewkes is lovely to watch at times with his little moves - but the bottom line is he could not punch for sh*t and that is always going to be his problem.
From my view, Fewkes looked confident and slick in the opener, but shipped a couple and it started looking like a Cotto v Margarito fight. Some of the pitter patter shots he threw were almost ridiculous.
Watching the fight back on sky the stoppage did look a bit quick, but from being 8 feet away and watching it you could tell Fewkes was gonna get splattered and was buzzed badly and looking to survive.
The ref stopping it as early as he did definitely saved Fewkes from getting pasted and for that he will fight another day.
Respect to Gethin, he showed no mercy and I believe that a fight with John Murray would be a barn stormer.
Shame for Fewkes as I wanted him to do well, but it was quite clear something wasn't right in his mind going into this fight.

Anyone know if Fewkes could be facing a fine for not making the weight?

Gomez,
You are so wide of the mark about Mikey's purse for the Khan fight.
£150,000 ? Do me a favour.
20% of that.

He got less than he was expecting - it didn't state it was a fine though. I hope it went to Gethin.stujones wrote:Anyone know if Fewkes could be facing a fine for not making the weight?
Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
Very solid performance from Gethin. He's earned his chance to challenge Murray for the British title.
If Fewkes wants to learn a thing or two about getting on with the job in hand he needs to look no further than his opponent.
Gethin just gets on with it and a fight with Murray will be a another British title cracker and I can't wait for it to happen.

Thats the excuse i was told, that Gomez got at least 4 times what they were being offered.twenty six wrote:Gomez,

Obviously it's fiction.
Re: Fewkes vs Gethin spoiler
F**king horrible stoppage that. It's been argued hundreds of times before, but I've always thought British ref's stop fights to early. Not saying Fewkes was gonna win or anything, but he hadn't exactly absorbed massive amounts of punishment. It's all good and well saying it was only a matter of time, but let the f**king fight play out for god sake.
As for Fewkes taking on Khan, if anyone didn't know that Fewkes was not up to that task, they do now.

As mentioned, you might want to check out the fight again and spot Fewkes' corner about to stop the fight themselves!!ArtOfWar wrote:F**king horrible stoppage that.
