BOXING: CHAMPIONS & CONTENDERS (1960 to 1969)

Post by Zelley »

The sixties was an interesting decade for boxing with the likes of Muhammed Ali,
Harold Johnson, Dick Tiger, Emile Griffith, Curtis Cokes, Carlos Ortiz, Vincente Saldivar,
Eder Jofre and Fighting Harada.

Throughout the decade there were many fine contenders such as Doug Jones,
Zora Folley, Eddie Cotton, Laszlo Papp, George Benton, Gaspar Ortega, Manuel Gonzalez,
Dave Charnley, Raul Rojas, Walter McGowan and Wilbert McClure.

The Pacific Northwest had the likes of Thad Spenser, Eddie Cotton, Denny Moyer,
Boone Kirkman, and others.

Canadians included George Chuvalo, Dave Downey, Joey Durelle, Billy McGrandle,
Blair Richardson, and Al Sparks.

And who could forget Britain's Henry Cooper, Brian London, Johnny Prescott,
Billy Walker, Johnny Pritchett, Wally Swift, Dave Charnley, and Howard Winstone.

How many would call Eddie Cotton of Seattle an "uncrowned champion"
after his bouts with Harold Johnson and Jose Torres. And who could forget the excitement of
California's Raul Rojas.

And how many remember the last four contenders for a piece of the heavyweight crown
including Thad Spenser, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Ellis, and Oscar Bonavena.

Then there were the tragedies of: Emile Griffith vs Benny Paret
and the sad death of Davey Moore in the Sugar Ramos fight.
Or the classic magic in the first E mile Griffith vs Joey Archer middlweight
title bout.

 :> and the beats goes on and then there were the likes of Randy Sandy,
Scrap Iron Johnson, Gypsy Joe Harris and Lionel Rose.

Ismael Laguna was interesting with his bouts against Carlos Ortiz.

Then there were some of those California featherweights in addition to Raul Rojas such as
Feankie Crawford and Bobby Valdez.

Ruben Olivares was for a time one of the best of the Sixties and part of the excitement of the Seventies.

Even Australia had their moment in the sun with Lionel Rose,
Johnny Famechon, and Rocky Gattelari.
