Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
Paul Appleby surprised me with his performance against Simpson to win the title, it was a very mature showing by a young lad, I thought Simpson would be to strong in the later rounds, but Paul took the storm and came through it.
Now he's got Pickering, who is a different type of boxer to Simpson, more movement and punches from differcult angles, but Pickering is also past his prime going by his fight against Marsh, it could be that making the Super Bantam limit took something out of Pickering that night. Or it could just be that a long career is coming to an end, with general wear and tear taking its toll.
On form Pickering could be too smart for Appleby at this stage, but i feel that youth will prevail on the night and Appleby will get to Pickering around the 10th round to force a stoppage, or could be a corner retirement.

Appleby for me.
I think Pickering is well and truly on the slippery slope and this will show on the night, with a comprehensive win inside the distance for appleby

I think Appleby stops him, and stops him quickly. Maybe in the 3rd or 4th.

Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
Pickering doesn't deserve a British title shot at featherweight having being convincingly beaten by Matt Marsh at super-bantam. His punch resistance appears to have eroded and his defence was never the best. I'd like to have seen Esham call it a day and worry about him in this fight against a hungry young fighter like Appelby.

Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
Pickering has had an alarming slump in form since leaving the Ingles

It's not a mandatory, Pickering is a quite reasonable choice for a volontaryBrian Moore wrote:Pickering doesn't deserve a British title shot at featherweight having being convincingly beaten by Matt Marsh at super-bantam. Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
Somewhere i read pickering was fighting Moran for the S-bantam weight English Title, that must be off then...
Think Appleby will be to clever and strong for him, cant see it going the distance, a few year back maybe it would be a different story. But its all about timing..

It's a poor fight pitting together a young prospect against a shot fighter competing outside of his natural weight division for the prestigious British title.Counter-puncher wrote:my thoughts exactly. i wonder if mr moore would have a different attitude if Appleby had a different promoter :xCoco wrote:It's not a mandatory, Pickering is a quite reasonable choice for a volontaryBrian Moore wrote:Pickering doesn't deserve a British title shot at featherweight having being convincingly beaten by Matt Marsh at super-bantam. Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
Esham boxed for the same title well over 10 years ago, he is quite competitive at 9st.Brian Moore wrote:It's a poor fight pitting together a young prospect against a shot fighter competing outside of his natural weight division for the prestigious British title.
I happen to think it will be a decent fight, Pickering is past his peak, which was as an excellent European champion. Appleby is certainly below that standard, and while they are trying to pick a win(the whole point of a volontary) the man from Newark is no soft touch and don't count out a suprise

Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
appleby's never fought a crafty boxer at the very least its a good little test of levels to see how he deals with extra class.
Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
It's not a great fight. The last think Esham needs at this stage of his career, and on current form, is a young, unbeaten puncher. Having said that, there are worse British title fights out there – Matt Marsh defending against a guy he has already beaten twice for example.
Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
I agree with Mr Moore hear - dissapointing, can only see one winner. Pickering shouldn't be fighting on.

Terrible fight. What happened to Stephen Bell?
Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
You should know maybe they didn't want the belt going to another promotional camp.
Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
I think this is a pretty decent first defence, especially for a voluntary. It will give Paul the chance to fight someone different, hence more experience. Yes, I know Esham has slipped quite a bit but you folk have to remember that this is still Paul's first defence and only his 13th fight. It could've been a much more inferior and less experienced opponent, so kudos to Paul and Paul's team.

Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
I'm more concerned with Pickering's welfare as opposed to Appleby making an easy first defence. Esham's decline, highlighted by both his fights with Sean Hughes is alarming. Matthew Marsh furher emphasised this. Pickering's taking far too many shots, his balance is terrible and his punch resistance has eroded. He's getting wobbled when hit clean and his engine isn't what it is either.
Pickering could get hurt.

You think Bell would be a better fight?boxingchat wrote:Terrible fight. What happened to Stephen Bell?
Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
this fight is not yet made, I am hearing maloney has not let him out of his contract with moran so some people might be jumping the gun here.Whats happen to skys quality control. How can pickering be approved above bell, pickering has never won a fight at featherweight and coming of a lost in a british superbantam title fight. Bring on bell.

Re: PICKERING vs APPLEBY
Well Bell is certainly a younger boxer on the way up, but is pretty unproven. He lost to Femi in a close one, and since then has beaten a handful of journymen, Pickering has been fighting at a better level, with mixed results.
So between the 2 boxers there's not much difference for me. Maybe would be better for a Bell v Pickering fight in an eliminator.
