Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next? If he doesn't retire.
There are loads of top opponents out there, so I really hope he doesn't retire. He still looks good enough to beat anyone at the weight, so he really should continue and attempt to become an all time great.

Providing Froch gets through his next fight well I think he should be his swan song.
would be the biggest fight here for years and not just pleasing the yanks for a change

Hopkins.
Some people think Hopkins won. The fight was close enough to warrant a rematch even if everyone will complain about it not being an action fight.

froch or dawson
if he's not interested in either of those then i think he should retire

Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
Glen Johnson. It would be a good action fight. Glen would come to the UK for relative peanuts, in hope of advancing his career with a world title win, and Joe would draw an enormous crowd if marketed as his definite farewell fight. They have something to settle, i.e. Joe running a mile when Glen was going to risk his IBF belt over here. Why doesn't Glen get his promoters to get his name about, send out feelers, etc etc?
Hopkins. Hopkins has said he'd come to the UK. I don't believe him. He'd want too much money. The fight would be in America on PPV, given that Joe and Hopkins looked great in their previous fights vs RJJ and Pavlik. Hopkins, despite some dreary outings, has been in successful PPV bouts with Taylor and DLH. By association with RJJ, Joe will be a bigger commodity. Yes, it sounds more like a meeting of accountants than a fight. The fight will be an outright mess, a boxing pigsty. But they have a score to settle, i.e. who's the better fighter.

Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
If he fights Dawson he'll lose his unbeaten record and won't get a massive payday either in my opinion. I don't think any of the others matter except for Hopkins and Kessler and he's already fought them, so I think he should just retire.
Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
He'll NEVER fight Hopkins again... Joe has already beaten him, and has nothing to prove against Bernard...
I'd like to see Joe's next (and perhaps last) fight to be against Carl Froch... I like Froch and I think he'd give Joe a cloe fight...
But if Joe wants a more "high profile" fight, why not take on Antonio Tarver...![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
if he keeps on fighting he'll lose one day and he wants to stay undefeated. he already beat hopkins and kessler, dawson doesnt bring in the money (yet) and he wont move back down to face froch
Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
It has to be Frochy in a Battle Of Britain, hopefully Taffy-bollocks puts up more of a fight than Enzo did ;;-)
Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
Iran Barkley.
Legend killer (Barkley beat Hearns twice) v legend killer (Joe beat Hopkins & Jones).
PPV, MSG, HBO. Catchweight. Massive fight.

i'd like to see him fight another british fighter,,,probably Froch.
the crowds seem to be much bigger on the UK events and a battle of britain style fight would be a good end to Calzaghe's career

Froch, Kessler, Dawson or Hopkins. All have their merits.
Froch would be a nice domestic clash against a fellow title holder if he gets by Pascal.
Kessler was his hardest fight (Hopkins fight was too dull to count)
Dawson is the new emerging talent at light heavyweight and a genuine test.
Hopkins looked energised in his fight against Pavlik, and I think is capable of giving Calzaghe a better rematch, though of course there's always the risk of a complete stinker.

Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
I hope Joes options are retire now, or have a final fight for the British fans in Cardiff against Froch. Not sure if Calaghe can get down to SM and be strong anymore though. Dawson would be too dangerous if Joe wants to quit undefeated. Tarver would be a risk as well. Hopkins too would be a risky and horrible fight anyway. If Joe can make the weight, as long as Froch gets past Pascal, I would love to see the two get it on. Joe would be far too fast for Froch and would beat him on points. Its a fight the British fans want and beating Froch would do his credibility over here a lot of good. More fights in the US for big paydays would end in tears, I think.

I think he should hit it on the head now, there will always be someone there for him to fight, but he has to retire someday.
If he's financially secure, he should retire and enjoy life.

Just retire, he's done it all now.
Hopkins - Been there, done that, it was awful and should never happen again
Dawson - Decent fighter, nothing more, nothing to gain for Joe, pointless fight
Zsolt Erdei - Joke post surely?
Carl Froch - Equally as much a joke as Erdei, never beaten anyone, never faught anyone, brings nothing to the table, next
Mikkel Kessler - ummmmm why, exactly? beaten comprehensively 1st time round
Jermain Taylor - Damaged goods, no box office, pointless fight
Lucian Bute - ummmm, again, a joke, surely
Kelly Pavlik - Damaged goods, also, quite shit
Arthur Abraham - Go back to Eurosport...

Well the 1st fight drew lousy ratings on HBO TV and was a horrible excuse for a fight, so why would it now be on PPV?

There is no score to settle, they "fought" it was shite, thats the end of the story
Boxing isnt about "settling scores" not when you are 46-0 with millions of pounds in the bank

He shouldn't fight again, but I'm suprised Winky Wright is not on your list. If he does fight I think it will be v him in Cardiff.

Re: Who should Joe Calzaghe fight next?
After a great deal of thought I think Joe should retire.
If however I suspect "money" will be the loudest voice then I would love to see a Kessler rematch - its my opinion that is the biggest test for Calzaghe.
From a purely selfish point of view it would be great to see him in with Clinton Woods but that fight would never happen in a million years.
If Calzaghe postponed his reitrement until way into 2009 - then of course the obvious fight next year would be Carl Froch - people seriously underestimate Froch - give him a couple of fights at WORLD level and if he comes through them which I suspect he will - then watch this forum go mad for that fight.
