The numbers are disapointing, but its far from a flop and will be the biggest non DLH PPV in boxing this year


Hopking - Pavlik did 190,000 buys and Casamayor-Marquez did 50,000

No, the demographics are quite different, PPV's are mostly bought by people having friends over and making a night of it, Watching boxing on an unreliable internet stream is no substitute for having friends over with a few drinks on a big TV and generally only used by people who were never going to buy the PPV in the 1st place

Enzo Calzaghe said they would reconsider retirement if some very big offers come in. I doubt the money's there. HBO spent a lot of money doing the 24/7 thing, something that was expected to seriously bolster the PPV #s. I think here is the change, where money stops getting thrown around on fights that aren't so great, when the senior bores stop getting their big chances.

Suppose Joe could still have a farewell fight with a big live gate in Wales - that can't be written off - shown on maybe regular HBO or Showtime. A big name won't go to Wales, but someone hungry who will take a pay cut (Johnson?) is possible.

A noble stance, but bollocks. Of course the emergence of free streams are a huge dent on PPV numbers. Not just for boxing but also for soccer etc. I never pay for a fight now that I can get on a stream, but I would have done so almost always a couple of years back.

So unless I'm exceptional (and its been proven i'm not..) then it will have an ever increasing impact on PPV numbers.

I think the promoters will need to look at co-promoting with bookies etc, as they do with a number of other sports. i.e stake £20 in bets and view the fight. The promise will be of a rock-solid lightning fast stream.

I read a really good article in the NYT on internet streams and PPV's affecting UFC, WWF and boxing, and the effects on all 3 were negligible for the reasons i stated above and for the fact that 95% of the PPV audience think an internet stream is a movie where very attractive women urinate on each other.

Bring on the new guys, build them up, put 'em in interesting fights so that when they are ready for PPV, the bouts are "must see" viewing.

I think Pavlik was pretty much encouraged to go into the wrong fight. He was doing well knocking guys out at middle, but up in weight, vs a defensive master - bad news.

If American TV are reducing their boxing budgets, and seriously cutting back, I reckon we'll see better comp for the TV dates, better fights, better learning curves, more aggressive matchmaking.

I see a lot of promise in Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell, Dawson, Danny Jacobs (whe they stop feeding him fat Mexican welterweights), Tavoris Cloud, Matt Korobov, and think something decent can be salvaged on Pavlik, Taylor. Maybe not many big future names, but there could be some interestign bouts.

Pavlik was made to look like a tit, I admit that. If Jones-Tito PPV #s encouraged the seniors tour, then Hopkins-Pavlik & Calzaghe-Jones might have signaled the end.
