9th Annual Bernie Schmidt Memorial Boxing Show was held on Saturday, November 22, 2008. The show was a great success. Many boxing clubs brought boxers and the number of bouts was cut off at 23. More bouts could have been made, but the show was originally intended to only have 15 bouts. The great turnout of boxers almost demanded that the number of bouts increase so the show was allowed to have 23 bouts. We probably could have had 35 bouts, but 23 was plenty.
The host team MGGA had a good night. 9 members of the club competed and the team did well. An overall record of 8-1 for the evening.
My son Niall Shimmell had his first open class bout at 152 and won a decision. Tyler Fish also had an open class bout at 152 and won a decision. Christian Thomas had an open class bout at 178 and won a decision. Craig Rood lost a close decision at 165 Novice. Roberto Arriaza won a decision - 178 J.O. (15-16). Valentine Rodriguez won at 85 J.O. (10-11). Abel Garcia won at 114 J.O. (15-16). Burim Beqiri won at 125 Novice. Efrain Garcia won at 95 J.O. (12-13).
There was a good crowd and all the boxers and coaches were given a free spaghetti dinner after the weigh-ins. It was a great night and Bernie would have been proud of his children who helped put on the show in his memory. Pat Schmidt, the chief official for the show did a great job putting it all together and the 9th annual show was probably the best one so far. Congrats to Pat on a great show.

Re: Results - 9th Annual Bernie Schmidt Show - Grand Rapids, MI
We have about 35 boxers that currently train at our gym on a fairly regular basis. Another 20 or so show up about once or twice a month. We have about 25 of our boxers who currently compete. We had 16 or 17 who weighed in on Saturday for our show and 9 got matched. A few more could have possibly gotten matched, but we already had too many bouts. Getting over half the boxers matched is great. If it wasn't our show, we probably would only have had 5 or 6 matched. That is usually how it goes.
The next show is out of town so we will probably take about 10 boxers and will hopefully get about 5 bouts.

I believe that I seen both of them fight in the 2008 West Michigan Golden Gloves. Your son was a junior than wasn't he? I don't remember much of his fight specifically. I seen Fish fight three times in the novice division during the past Gloves. He likes to fight in close and uses a lot of body punches, not a lot of power but he just keeps going till he wears opponents out. He also got the good luck of getting a couple of opponents who lacked the toughness to weather him. How many open fights has he had now?My son Niall Shimmell had his first open class bout at 152 and won a decision. Tyler Fish also had an open class bout at 152 and won a decision.
Also I am wondering if you can tell me anything about a couple of my favorite fighters from this side of the state, former Golden Gloves state champ Javon Barnes and 2008 Golden Gloves state champ Johnny Garcia?
Thanks

Yes, Niall fought as a JO boxer during the '08 West Michigan Golden Gloves. Yes, Tyler did box in the '08 GG in the novice division. I think the bout at the Bernie Schmidt show was Tyler's first open-class bout. He is now 7-2.Trey wrote:I believe that I seen both of them fight in the 2008 West Michigan Golden Gloves. Javonn boxed about a month ago in Bay City and won. He is boxing out of the Trigger Boxing Club of Traverse City. I'm not sure what is next for him. Pros?
As far as Johnny goes, I see him a lot more often. He often comes to our gym for sparring. He was at the Bernie Schmidt show, but did not get matched. He is probably going to get matched for the Benton Harbor show on December 13th. The show is at the Bobo Brazil Community Center, 472 Cass Street, Benton Harbor, MI 49022. Show time is 6:00 pm. I don't know how much tickets will be, but they are usually quite reasonable - about the same as a movie ticket. You should come to the show. It looks like Tyler will be matched.
