Tell me about Maurice Hope..
Re: Tell me about Maurice Hope..
Maurice boxed for Repton as an amateur and boxed in the '72 Olympics. He turned pro with Terry Lawless and suffered a loss to Bunny Sterling in an ambitious crack at the British middleweight title. It was personal between Sterling and Hope, and Lawless foolishly allowed Hope to try and settle his differences in the ring. The advent of the light-middleweight division in this country allowed southpaw Hope to win a British title and a Lonsdale Belt outright. He then stopped Vito Antuofermo for the European title in Italy - a great display - was robbed in a challenge for the WBC title against Eckhard Dagge (a draw in Germany) and waited two years for another crack, this time against Rocky Mattioli, also in Italy. Hope came out and dropped Mattioli in the opening seconds - a thrilling start - and proceeded to wear him down. Mattioli eventually retired on his stool, claiming he had broken his wrist when he put his arms down to break his fall during the first-round knockdown. Hope gave him a rematch at Wembley a year later (1980) and boxed and punched him to a standstill in 11 rounds. He made three defences of his WBC title before Benitez came along. He had one more fight after Benitez, losing a tight one to rugged Italian Luigi Minchillo. Hope was never box office but he was strong and clever and relentless, and would find you out.Robinson wrote:I am interested in knowing more about him.
