Pacquaio v ODLH SPOILER

Post by SticknMove »

This sport just confounds me at times.

Pacquaio looked incredible tonight. Never thought he would win this one let alone give such a one-sided beatdown against the 'bigger man'. Too fast and heavy handed moving in and out and side to side. ODLH looked like an old man in there (perhaps he knows how JCC must have felt after he fought him).

I dont fancy Hatton's chances against Pacman in all honesty but it will present a very different matchup stylewise.

Mayweather is the fight I want to see. The winner of that would have a pretty serious claim for ATG #1 status.

Well it would be an enormous fight. Not sure about the claim about ATG no.1 spot though.

What a dreadful, supine performance by DLH. He didn't do anything. Pacquiao looked superb, yes, but for the last three rounds DLH just stood and let himself get beaten up.

I have said more than once this week that Pacquaio is the best offensive boxer of our generation, and will be remembered one day alongside the Durans and the Pryors of this world, but deary me DLH was little more than a punch bag. He had nothing.

All week my boxing/drinking partner Vladislav has been repeating rumours from the Russian boxing scene that DLH would let Pacquiao win. I could never ascertain the motivation for this, and told Vlad I thought it was garbage, but DeLa Hoya's performance was so bad he almost looked as if he did go into the tank.

Obviously, though, the truth was that he got old, and the weight was an issue for him. But, Jesus, even Roy Jones showed a bit of heart to make it to the end.

Sad to see him getting beaten up, but for a guy who has fought an unimpeachable array of talent through his career, and has shown tremendous heart on many occasions, that was a pitiable way to draw the curtain.

Well, both have beaten DLH, the major marquee name of this generation, Pac doing so in spectacular fashion, jumping up about 3 weight divisions to do it.

Pac has beaten hall of famers in Barerra, Morales and JMM. He is a 4 weight world champion and has done all this before the age of 30. Style wise he is also probably the most improved fighter in boxing history, going from a one game plan slugger to a heavily skilled boxer with world class speed and power.

Mayweather, a 5 weight world champion, who has beaten the best in every division he has been in.

Both guys are the best 2 of the last few years and a win against the other I think would give them enough credentials to make a claim to ATG #1. Top 5 definite.

Pacquiao not even 30, could even add to it if he beat Mayweather with Hatton and many other scalps out there.

At face value Carbo you are right.

Forgetting about the Vlad conspiracy theory you nailed it by saying that ODLH just got old overnight and it took someone like Pacquaio to produce a performance like that to reveal it. ODLH had no answers, at this late stage in his career, to combat the speed and onslaught that came his way. There's a shelf life in boxing and ODLH just came to the end of his.

As brilliant as Pacquaio was tonight he still can not have a claim to being the best WW in the world.

The problem is that DLH said he trained for King Kong

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7766980.stm

He would have been better off if he'd trained for Pacquaio.

You are not going to get an argument from me about how good Mayweather and Pacquaio are. Both are modern day great fighters and a square off between them would be hugely anticipated. I have championed Pacquaio from the time he beat Barrera in their first meeting as a fighter willing to chase down the big names and therefore was one of the most significant fighters out there.

But as I say comparing these guys to the likes of Robinson and Armstrong just overstates it IMO. However, ATG status would definately be secured by either one or both - just a question of where you would place them lower down behind those true greats.

Incredible performance. Pacman is an modern day Henry Armstrong. Would love to see him get it on with Ricky next. That will be fight of the year. If/when Manny wins he fights Floyd for best fighter of the decade.

Boxing is hot again.

I'd be suprised if Mayweather would go near Manny after that.

This is astonishing, I'm glad Manny won but I never thought he would.

I really like Teddy Atlas. I think he's excellent value for money. Him and Steve Bunce would make an interesting pair of analysts.

Anyway, here's what he has to say about the match.

A few things:

1) THIS is what boxing was created for, I don't know why people are so amazed. I always said talent negates size.

2) Mayweather would still smash Manny. Let's be clear, DLH lost because he was probably weight drained and didn't move his hands.

3) Atlas, as ever, was spot on.

4) Mayweather didn't beat the "best" at every weight he fought, no way.

5) Mayweather-Pacquaio in 2009. Biggest fight ever???

Amazing, all hail the Pacman. I thought anyone picking Manny by KO must be mad, but the guy is just a phenom. Freddie Roach was spot on in convincing the camp to take the fight - Oscar just can't pull the trigger anymore. Outstanding.

Absolutely sublime from Pacquaio - he fought reminisent of his first fight with Barrera. I was really concerned that something was up with DLH when they announced the day of the weight fight. Clearly at 35, he cannot re-hydrate like he could before.

It was like Leonard vs Norris, Ali vs Holmes, Jones vs Tarver/Johnson.... and I just hope history will be kind enough on Oscar to see it like that. Too old to be messing around with his body and moving down the weights. All of these did seriously crazy things with their weight prior to these major one sided losses. Oscar was the same.

I'm a little dissapointed that some people are suggesting the DLH "wanted" Pac Man to win and showed no heart. The reason why he wasn't throwing any punches, was because he couldn't. He couldn't pull the trigger - whether it is age, weight or a combination of both, and to say "at least Jones showed the heart to stay the course" - sorry, Pacquiao is a different animal to Calzaghe, who for me - let Roy off the hook a little. This fight went 2 rounds more than what it should have, it was sad to watch.

So yes, I am a big DLH fan... I am a big Pacquiao fan also... but sorry, not sure how boxing was "hot" again after that. It was very sad to watch, just like it was sad to watch Leonard vs Norris.

However, not going to discredit Pacquiao in any way. He was sublime, looked so strong, so quick, so defensively sharp. Oh yes, Mayweather vs Pac Man would be THE fight to watch. I would also like to see him fight Hatton (sorry Ricky, don't fancy your chances much) at 140 and would even give him a shout against Margarito... imagine if Pacqiao can become the #1 Welterweight in the world... he would have to be up there with the Ray Robinson's then.

I would hate to call Pac Man vs Mayweather, actually no.... I would predict the Phillipino Master to win that one. I think he is quicker than Mayweather, its harder than Mayweather and has a better engine.

I have to pick you up on these.

1) Pacquaio would be beaten by Marg, Cotto and Williams. He will never become the #1 welter just like Floyd never will.

2) Mayweather would destroy Pac-Man. Seriously man, think about. A heavy punching counter fighter like Floyd would smash Manny to bits, and if Manny's team dare call Floyd out I will be surprised.

Floyd WAS the #1 Welter.... he beat the #1 and #2 in the devision. Margarito was busy fighting the likes of Lujan to be considered number #1, Cotto had just started as a Welter focusing on the likes of Urkal and Quintana to be considered number #1, Williams wasn't a belt holder.

Infact, if Williams goes back to Welter - then Margarito shouldn't be #1 now anyway.

Just like I said prior to the DLH fight, I did go for DLH so I am not going to dare say "I told you so", but you cannot discount a guy who hasn't lost a round a lightweight and now at Welterweight against, good opperators, at all.

Margarito isn't invinsible, he can be outboxed - he was down on points for long periods against Cotto.

Cotto isn't invinsible - he's just lost.

Mosley looks washed up.

Williams for my money is the best of the lot, but he's lost recently.

Clottey is the surprise package, but didn't look that good against a faded Judah.

Their good and competitive, but not great - you cannot discount Manny.

2) Oscar did land SOME (albeit limited) shots vs Pac man... and they bounced off him. I think Pac man walks through Floyd's shots and out works him. If Oscar can outwork and even out speed Mayweather for large periods of their fight. Then so can Manny.

Good riddance to DLH!

The mans a vulture and an opportunist! :D

He go mashed down BUT yet again he surrendered just like he did against B-Hop

Go out on your shield I say! :D

DLH is a bully. Pity it was not Margarito in there with him!

:D

Gwannnnnnn, Pacman!!

DLH was mashed down and he quit.

Great day for Boxing - DLH just a cashcow - glad Manny beat his arse!

Harsh DG - I'm sure most are not surprised that I would say that.

Not saying what you are not saying is correct about the Cashcow business - is that such a problem though? However, this "Oscar quit" - the guy threw next to zero punches in there for the last two rounds and the doctor pulled him out with the ref saying "lay on the ropes again and I am stopping the fight". How is that a quit.

Oh Ali is such a shit house for not finishing the Holmes fight.

I won't even mention Duran!
