Should Calzaghe gun for cruiserweight title?

Post by Autobarn »

After seeing Pac - a fast southpaw - beat DLH up in weight, I'm wondering if Calzaghe should challenge for the cruiser title.

Preposterous idea, I know. There is a big gap between 175 and 200-pounds.

HOWEVER, consider this. Cunningham v Adamek will be for the Ring title. Cunningham is an underpowered crsuier. No power at all, in fact. Adamek's a blown up light heavy.

Joe's speed and southpaw stance could give them fits. Would Joe take it? Fair enough, cruiser's not a glamour division. But this fight has massive novetly value. Joe struggled to make 175 last time. Pac dared to be great last night, will Joe take that leap, dare to be the #1 p4p?

Why? There is no big name at cruiser and he's probably going to have one last fight in Cardiff next summer.

It won't be at cruiser.

Why?

I just said there's no big names. But it'd be a big event. It'd be a big curio. It'd be for a 3rd weight Ring title. No struggle to make 175 anymore. Neither Cunn nor Adamek are powerful. Neither have big home followings, so could end up travelling.

Why?

To prove he's maybe the very best in boxing. The p4p #1. I'm sure there'd be plenty of dosh in it. He'd have to deal with King though which won't be easy.

IBF and Ring title is better recognition than the WBO title.

JC should not be attempting any moves up to CW, as there is nothing up there for him to get excited about.

I think JC has served his time, but if he were to fight again, I personally think he should have a Summer open-air fight in Wales against Glen Johnson.

It may not be the 1st opponent people think of, but JC owes Glen one (or is that 3 :P ) & were he to fight again, it would get the monkey of Glen Johnson off his back, as Glen will forever say that Joe ducked him if they don't ever fight.

I said - as rediculous as its sounds that Haye should have had one last fight at Cruiser vs Joe.

It would be the biggest fight in the UK ever.

If Haye was still at cruiser Autobarn would have a good point, it would be a breathtaking last fight for JC.

Sadly he's not....

I remember you saying that, and that sort of got me going on this thread, along with the news that Cunn-Adamek is for the IBF title and vacant Ring title, and seeing Pac beat DLH.

Haye has the heavyweight punch, so I could never see it happening. However, Cunningham can't punch - his only KO of recent was over Lloyd Bryan, an Ottke victim - and Adamek was a puncher only at 175.

I know they're not well known names. But the risk level actually looks a sensible one in this case. The question is, what of the reward? Historically, and in today's rankings, it'd put him on another level. The question is, can a good promoter make it lucrative?

But Johnson, Dawson, guys like that are no bigger names than Cunningham and Adamek, are they?

Joe Calzaghe for 3rd weight world title, to compete with Pac for p4p crown - is that event enough?

Dawson is.... okay cool, actually the topic is slightly digressing which gives me the opportunity to talk about Bunce's comments at Max Kellerman post Calzaghe vs Jones. Just WTF was Bunce doing laughing off Kellerman's suggestions at Calzaghe vs Dawson 1) Dawson is a legitmate contender to the #1 position - should Hopkins been awarded it after he retired, 2) Dawson just beat impressively Antonio Tarver - movie star, olympic amateur and original legend killer - Tarver is known in the states... who knows what that is going to do for Dawson's popularity, not Bunce anyway.

Yes, so Dawson is a bigger name than Cunnigham and Johnson - Tarver is well known, all his fights are on TV... even his post Hopkins fights in which he has fought tire opponents (prior to Woods) and looked shot.. they still made US TV. Many people bought the "Tarver is back" hype after Woods - but Dawson won, and won well.

Hagler 2002 - as a match up is sounds rediculous, but as an event it would make them mega millions. I remember back in 2000 laughing about a DLH vs Mayweather match up, Laughing at Jones vs Holyfield (no he fought the guy who beat Holyfield), and most people laughed at Pacquiao vs DLH... smaller guy won all those.

Bunce is a boxing lightweight internationally.

He has no credibility among the big name writers over there.

Who cares if he laughs off Kellerman's suggestions?

I think the issue could be - can certain factors make up for lack of cruiserweight name value.

OK, few outside the hardcore know of Cunningham v Adamek.

However - let's say Joe has farewell fight in Wales. Already a big-ish event. Joe gunning for 3rd world title as recognised by "Bible of Boxing". Makes it a bit bigger. Gunning for p4p crown - he could certainly have an argument if he beat the man at cruiser. And - above all - engaging in a real test of his abilities.

Or, can promoters only sell fights by getting a shell of a name in the other corner? Is that the ONLY way to make a fight big - I reckon not, personally.

I'd like to see Manny to eat some burgers, and for JC to boil down for six months or so and 'get it on'.

The thing people are forgetting in this argument is that Calzaghe trains/spars every day with a cruiser in Enzo so he should know if could cope with the step up in power.

I am loving this idea more and more especially considering what legends have been made of hopkins/manny/de la hoya/jones etc moving up and winning through the weights.

Would bring that genuine dont know what is gona happen feel like manny/de la hoya fight which then in turn brings excitment and money.

Hopkins, Manny, De La Hoya, Jones beat World-Class Fighters.

Who is Calzaghe actually going to face at Cruiser?

I mean Cruiser is in a worse state than the HW Division.

Tarver made some waves as RJJs nemesis, but quickly became unpopular. Dawson isn't regarded as a big name, not just because he beat Tarver, despite being a high calibre of fighter.

However I will agree in the sense that he has the backing of major television, in this case Showtime (or at least he has), as Showtime have put up with mismatches and have shown his 2 or 3 "big" fights.

I dont disagree but obviously be more exciting if a big name to take on. But if you are taking the opinion that he is going to fight again there is no one with a name for the public at LH either. So you need something else to make it exciting for the public and that is moving up in weight.

Well, I was suggesting the winner of Adamek-Cunningham which will be recognised by both IBF and Ring mag.

Is boxing in such a dire state that Calzaghe vs the winner of that fight, would not be big? Are there no real promoters anymore who can make it big?

Cruier's not in a bad state. It's just in a transitional phase, where presumably Akexander Alexeev is waiting to pick up the mantle.

Tounge firmly in my cheek here !
IMO JC would be awesome at "light-cruiser" . Hey come on you know the boxing authorities will create this division sooner or later !!!!
JC vs ENZO MAC at light-cruiser????
Oh and THEN David Haye v JC at "super-cruiser" !!!!
