I was honored to be asked to judge the Army VS Navy, collegiate showdown last Friday evening. It was really an enjoyable night watching these two teams go heads up for bragging rights on the eve of their football rivalry game. The energy was high and the guys fought their hearts out. The see/saw battle was tied after ten bouts and the two big guys had to answerer the big question. After round 1 it looked like it was going to be a possible tossup , but Navy coach Jim McNally must have given some direct orders to his cadet who stepped it up to and left no question as to which branch of the military had the best collegiate boxing team on this night. With no controversies about any bout and a couple RSCs , there were a lot of exciting bouts. I was glad I as able to be a part of that kind of history. A thanks goes out to the Navy Coach for letting me be be a part of this event and my props to both coaches for bringing teams in ready for battle.
I encourage any gym close a university to think about taking the time to get a collegiate program started. It is just different enough from the Jrs or open class to bring another factor into play. I do traina couple boxers that compete for our local university. The rules and the boxers make it a level playing field fore these kids and it is seasonal so you do get a break. In some ways it gives a sense of coaching a collegiate team sport and opens you up to learn new things that can be applied to our programs.

Re: Army Navy Rivalry
Thanks for taking part Hal. It was a good night of boxing as it always is when the service academies box each other. Air Force is always a good team as well. We all box a dual match the night before our football games with each other. We also box in a tri service match in Detroit every year.
BTW, we call our students midshipmen, even the females. Army and Air Force students are called cadets.

Seems strange that they don't let their students go to the front or the back of the ship, must be afraid they might fall off being new and all.
