His problems stemmed from eating far too much and not taking training seriously. When in peak shape he would given Lewis a great title fight.

I cant believe they are letting him fight. He's been inactive for years and was showing signs of mental deterioration well before the two golota fights. In those two fights he also took a consistent beating and they are only wins on his record because Golota went mental and couldnt stop punching his nuts! He really shouldn't be allowed to fight for his own safety.

Yeah not sure about that, though whacking Larry Donald at the press conf was a bit weird..

Did he dump his WBO belt eventually? Can't remember, the 3rd Holy fight is listed as non title.

There are two sides to every story. They were actually set up to fight for the garbage can belt (Bowe and Rock Newman had apologised to King Jose) when Lewis got KO'd by Mccall.

If they had fought in 1992 I'd give Bowe a really good chance. By 1996 Bowe had deteriorated Roy Jones fast.

Yes that is right, the would have happened had Lewis not lost to McCall. Lewis didn't like Bowe and vice versa, and apparently Bowe was offfered a pittance to discourage him from the shot at Lewis' belt, which is why Bowe didn't want to give Lewis a shot once he got the title. It wasn't that he was just running scared.

I think Riddick Bowe had all the tools to become an all time great, but never quite got to that level.
His 3 fights with Holyfield were truly great, but he never had a substained run against top quality opponents to give us a true idea of his worth.

At least when he did retire his manager Rock Newman went with him.
Newman used to come across as a complete tool when involved with boxing, but looking him up now he has actually comes across as a decent guy, shame he never showed that when linked with Bowe

ermm I think you're getting mixed up, Bowe had the title first, Lewis inherited it after Bowe dumped it rather than fight him - A blatant dodge if ever I saw one.

It was only when Bowe had no title and no where to go that a fight with Lewis was agreed.

I always think Bowe is dealt a harsh card with this "he ducked Lennox Lewis". The fact was he beat Holyfield in an absolute war in Oct/Nov 1992... by Dec 1992 he was told to push up or shut up by the WBC (or put it in the bin) to fight Lewis.

I'm sorry, but Bowe was not ready to fight such a tough opponent in early 1993. It would have been boixng suicide - he needed, and warranted, a long rest and a couple of bums - and thats what he did. He fought Holyfield a year after his truimph, and that still not only was the money, but also still alot of respect - cause most regarded Holyfield as #2 and Lewis just some paper champion.

I loved the way Bowe boxed - he had a great set of skills for a big man. Dominating jab, booming right hand and nice, sharp, short punches when fighting in close.

He will not get the same level of plaudits from historians in comparison to his contemporaries Holyfield and Lewis but I for one used to really enjoy watching him fight.
