Martin

I assume this is based on how the fighter performed the previous year. Still I can't see how Alex Miteff won it in 62. You had way better fighters than him.

I wasn't aware so many from Argentina had taken it out. Nice :TU:

Martin, you seem well-travelled. Someone asked me recently who the best fighter of Portuguese heritage was, & I have to concede, I came up blank. What is your take?

Probably Bobo Olson, GI. His Mum was Portuguese, Dad was a Swede.

There have been a few American fighters of Portuguese ancestry, who were decent. Johnny Gonsalves (way better than his record, check some of his wins) Babe Herman (Sousa) Teddy Silva, Al Mello, and of course a couple of pretty good Cape Verdeans (actually more black than Portuguese) like George Araujo and Joey Lopes.

Dear Friends,

This list is in an old issue of 1971 of the Historia del Boxeo (Boxing History) a very good magazine of Buenos Aires, C.F., Argentina, directed by Roberto Mezzadra, a great boxing journalist. I only knows the list, I unaware the reasons and criterions for the nominations.

Seamus is one of the best members and men of the Forums of BoxRec, and he knows a lot of boxing, very knowledgeable, more than me, and I thinks in him like a very good friend. He is, too, a close friend of the books and the ideas. I respect him profoundly.

Goodnight, Irene, is also a very good boy, and too knows much, and we can see his intelligence in their answers and questions or thinkings. He his a very valious presence in BoxRec.

About the Portuguese fighters, I don't know much of this (please, see again the answer of Seamus), but I remember the names of Jose Santa, the very good Johnny Pena (who beat Fidel LaBarba, drew twice Midget Wolgast and win over Freddie Miller). There are any Brazilian fighters (of course, Eder Jofre, member of a family --Jofre-Zumbano-- of more than of 30 fighters) but, too, the history of Brazil in boxing is only Jofre, and anyothers so far of Eder.

Thanks very much for your kind interest, boys!

Thanks for posting Martin. Argentina is a fascinating country and Monzon is a fighter I can never watch enough of or read enough about.

On a slightly different topic are there any budding young fighters we should be looking out for?

Ezzard,

Thanks you very much! Between the boys your answer there are various, for example Cesar Cuenca, the Matthysse brothers (kings of the K.O.), Carlos Abregu or Marcos Maidana, between others.
