Donny Lalonde's WBC title

Post by cybox »

Does anyone think it was was fair that champion Donny Lalonde had to drop down to the 168 pound limit anywhere from 5-7 pounds below his fight weight in order to fight for the newly created WBC 168 pound title when his WBC 175 pound title was on the line as well. I felt it drained Lalonde for the fight. I heard that Lalonde made around $5 million for the fight and maybe that was the reason in order to make the fight happen but to me it should have seemed that it should have just been for either the 168 or 175 pound title. Maybe they agreed to the weight. I know Leonard called the shots on the fight and maybe that's what it took to make it happen.

I suppose it was a good pay day for him. But to have two titles on
the line like that too me always seems complicated and political.

Obviously he as the champ was happy for that, then so be it.

It was a good win for Leonard in any case, contray to the bashings
Lalonde gets by alot of people, he seems like a pretty capable fighter
and a danger to many around that weight.

Leonard could dictate terms (as he did against Hagler) because he was the money attraction. If LaLonde had been asked to go down to 150, he probably would have tried to do it. Wouldn't have mattered. LaLonde wasn't in Leonard's class as a fighter, even if Sugar Ray had faded a bit by then

--- Nobody ever claimed Donny was of the same caliber a fighter, but he was bigger, stronger, and knocked the snot out of Leonard before he ran out of steam. Making weight clearly had a negative impact on him him.

Leonard, and Holmes are big names responsible for the carnival way boxing is being run today with multi titles within the same org. Guy like Tyson is never credited enough for cleaning the heavy mess up. Now we got Manny cleaning house often without a title at stake. Glenn Johnson and Tarver did something along those lines, chucking their titles so they could fight for the IBO title which is like no title.

Leonard's LH title was as bogus as Guerra's 118-110 score for Leonard in the Hagler fight. In fact, the only title he ever defended in his comebacks was the WBC super middle title against Hearns whom he made come in light, and Duran who was only 158 for the match. Bogusssssssssss.

Dude, I'm not defending what Leonard did. Not a big fan of his. I thought he lost to both Hagler and Hearns in Leonard-Hearns II and his win over Duran was BS since Manos de Piedra was going on 39 at the time. But from what I saw, I really don't believe LaLonde beats Leonard at any weight.

Donny moved to Vancouver Island, helped in boxing in Victoria
and I believe he moved up-Island, bought a big house with lots of land
and doing okay with the big proceeds from the Leonard fight.

How Donny ranks as a world class boxer is not that important.
The important point is he could be considered a Canadian version
of the 'Cinderella Man" although, like some, he may be remembered as "Golden Boy".
