Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Amir Khan

Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Amir Khan

Okay, it's not going to happen any time soon, if ever, but I know Khan rarely gets positive bias here so I'm interested to know what you guys think would happen if Khan fought Gamboa in March 09.

This is inspired by a discussion here: http://boxpicks.com/index.php?mode=info&fid=7885
Person 1: They're milking Gamboa before he gets chinned like Khan did.
Person 2: Gamboa would take Khan to the cleaners.
Person 3: ahahaha im sorry but khan wld beat the crap outta gamboa. They are similar in talent level, gamboa maybe having the edge, but khan is a big lightweight and gamboa has been hurt by featherweights.
Person 2: Yeah, and Khan has been hurt and knocked down by blown up, shot featherweights. And Gamboa is faster than Khan, and more ferocious.
Person 4: to be fair, i think gamboa is a lot better than khan. he has faced better opposition. AND he has a better chin, just no defence. putting aside my personal dislikes for khan, he has no defence and no chin, but an amazing offence. he is the type of fighter that will knock you out if you arent prepared to knock him out
Note: The fight would occur at 135 lbs, March 2009, in Manchester. Gamboa weighed 140 lbs in the ring against Jiminez, back in May 2008.

I'd lean more towards Gamboa at this stage, Khan's not far enough removed from the Prescott loss yet and is still in the process of overhauling his style.

Gamboa's an accident waiting to happen though, so who knows.

Any world class lightweight beats Khan. Gamboa ko 3 Khan.

Methinks Gamboa's cruising for a KO loss himself. I won't be surprised if he has a "Prescott".

Gamboa keeps fighting with his chin in the air, and gets chinned while he goes off on a shoeshine combo.

Don't think Gamboa will learn until he's been knocked out.

Gamboa is heading to a title shot, and Israel Vazquez is on about moving up to featherweight. Better get some defence soon...

I think Gamboa is the best prospect in the world to be honest BUT he fights very very dangerously.. :TU:

I think he should tread carefully with the serious punchers in his respective division.. :box:

I agree. I think Gamboa would win, but he might have some trouble with Khan's height and reach advantages and well as his speed. Gamboa's fast as well though, and he'd probably blister in and destroy Khan quickly.

Gamboa is a featherweight, and not yet proven World class there, so I don't understand why you're calling him a World class lightweight already.

RE: Gamboa's chin. I've said for a while that he's going to get knocked down often if he keeps fighting the same way he does, but I feel more confident about his chin after seeing him decked last time out, by a FOREARM. Gamboa recovered really quickly and looked menacing destroying Ramirez shortly afterwards. I think Gamboa is someone you might be able to knock down, but is a completely different story when it comes to keeping him down.

Gamboa lacks a defence, the same as Khan, but Khan has the better jab. I would fancy Khan to knock him out, but a knock-out for Khan can't be ruled out as well. Both fighters are good offensively, shocking defensively.

Gamboa is an alltogether better boxer/fighter/puncher.

He would dismantle Khan .. probably slowly, but very painfully.

Fighting such a small fighter Khan would be punching down and thus exposing even more his already weak defence, his speed would be negated by Gamboas superior ability ..

Khan ain`t the puncher his record suggests he is .. take his speed away he has nothing.

Take his speed away he has nothing. Sorry that's pathetic..

Like saying with Tyson, Take his Speed away he is nothing
Foreman, take this power away he is nothing but a big slow target
Hatton, take away his brawling ability, he is nothing but a easy target that will do nothing except get cut.

At the moment, Gamboa would be favorite in my opinion, but Khan has the talent to beat him, just need's to sort out defence

Are you trying to convince us you compare the dynamite punching of Tyson and thunderous punching of Foreman to the quick .. but non-concusive punching of Khans? .. that would really be pathetic

You`ve totally lost me with your comparisons .. do you really think Hatton is just a brawler? is that all it took to beat the names on his record?

Gamboa wins, but hits the canvas yet again last night. He must have a very nervous management team at the moment...

You cant deny Khan has some serious talent.

You cant deny Gamboa has some serious talent.

You cant deny Khan has a weak chin.

You cant deny Gamboa has a weak chin.

Khan was knocked out because he fought wrecklessly.

Gamboa will be knocked out because he fights wrecklessly.

So what does that tell you?

Birds of a feather. By the time these two are in sight of each other Khan will probably be the different animal he's now trying to mould and Gamboa will probably have been KO'd and have had to make the adjustments to his style that Khan has.

Gamboa's chin is decent. His problem is his defence.

Cheers Terry, it's going to interesting to see how he gets on. He's getting knocked down at a much higher level than Khan though, it seems - the records and KO% of some of the recent boxers they've recently been putting him in with are excellent, same weight too. No protecting going on here. They better sort his defence out pretty damn quick though

I think that the fact Gamboa is getting knocked down so often, yet getting back up and winning indicates a poor defence rather bad chin. Surely if his chin was bad then he would stay down and get KO'd? Anyway, for Gamboa and Khan, whatever their respective problems may be, it's going to be an exciting ride finding out how good they both are.

Oh. My. Word.
Read what i said.

I'm not comparing him to Tyson or Foreman lol.

What i am saying is, you can't take away a fighters qualities, and judge him then. That's pretty stupid isn't it?

SO i gave a example. It's like judgig Foreman, and saying, Take away his power, he is nothing.

Well yeah, But let him keep his power, and you have the HW World Champion

They're not jokes. But Earl and Gomez seemed to be on their last legs at domestic level. Slow and easy to hit and had seen far better days. Limond is talented, but a light (if sharp and accurate) puncher and unproven. And like Gomez had come up from super feather.

If Khan-Gamboa ever happens, Khan will have reached world class, and Gamboa will be well on the slide.

So will it be Khan-Arthur coming soon?

Domestically no they are not but world calss they are.

So if a fighter doesn't quite male it to world class he is therefore a "joke"?

Wow, awesome sentiments there, 99% of fighters who have ever laced up gloves are "jokes"

Very true

I`ve yet to see Gamboa given the jelly legs Khan has had when he has been put down.
And gamboa has fought guys at his weight .. Khan mostly has not.
charlieb wrote: Khan was knocked out because he fought wrecklessly.

Thats correct about Khan, but it also highlighted his total lack of chin .. he was wobbled by a jab :o
Gamboa does fight wrecklessly at times .. but he has never been KO`ed so the statement is nonsense.

Khan and gamboa are a couple weights apart, and I`d guess they`ll stay that way throughout their careers.
But how can you seriously speculate that Khan will be successful in changing his style and gamboa will have been knocked out? as of yet there has been no solid proof that any of these is going to happen.
Khan may have looked better in his last fight, but the opponent was brought in for that exact reason, Khan has always looked good against that level of opposition.

And, as said, Gamboa has never been given jelly legs by any of his flash knockdowns.
