"MADE" on MTV doing a show on boxing

Post by kidscoach »

I hear that MTV's MADE is doing a show about a girly "princess"-type learning to box to "toughen up". It seems that Coach Porter has 6 weeks to train this young lady to participate in an amateur boxing match. Positive publicity like this is much needed. I'm pretty sure Coach Porter could train about anyone to box, so this should be a pretty neat program

I have also heard of another one with a 15 year old boy who is creative in the arts and wants to try his hand at being more physical so he can relate to his athletic brother and sports minded father. its supposed to take place in CO.

Just out of curiosity - do any of you coaches actually think 6 weeks is enough time to prepare a boxer for their first bout? Most coaches I know don't let their boxers participate until they've had at least 8 months of training.

I saw that episode and then realized that I had just returned from the gym where they shot it. It was at Augusta Boxing Club in Georgia. She had her first match and lost, but did better than I thought she would considering the amount of time she had to prepare and considering where she was when she started.

Unless this is a new one, it aired last year. . .

Is the Coach Porter referred to in this thread Kenny Porter from Ohio? If so, Kenny could get the girl ready to compete in 6 weeks, especially if he can work with her everyday for several hours and get her to run each day.

You can get a boxer ready to compete in a short time if they come into the gym with some natural gifts, athleticism and good conditioning. They won't be ready to beat an open fighter, but another beginner is possible. 6 weeks is short and it is the exception to the rule. Most boxers will train for months before they are ready to compete.

It is a new episode, and the MTV people set the criteria. If anyone can do it, I think Ken Porter can. And a beginner usually forgets everything they were ever taught anyway in that first bout. Survival is their theme. He told me he needs a SHW and a lady (105-120) for the show if anyone has someone. The SHW has 2 bouts, but will go with someone with more experience, and the lady has 1 bout, and will go with someone with a little more experience. The show is January 17th at the Tangiers in Akron Ohio.

No, he won't talk to you anymore Hal, but he still talks to me. :DD

The SHW had some (about 5 MMA bouts) so he has a little more experience "fighting" than just 2 amateur boxing bouts. The guy is 6'4" and about 230#. Are there any SHW's that want to box on a good show? If so, just contact Kenny Porter or post your info here and I will pass it along to Kenny.

Hal, I will probably see your mug on TV again in February on ESPN. I've noticed that you don't talk to me as much now that you are a TV personality. What's up with that? I hope Fernando continues to shine and I'll be seeing you guys win a title sometime in 2010.

No sooner did I post my comment, I got a call from Kenny........and this completely true,,,,,,he called and when I said hello, he said who's this, I said "you called me, who's this. Comes to find out, our Kenny suffers from dementia and taking too many blows in his younger years. If he happens to call just be nice to him. he's getting along in his years and he's liable to say anything or try to sell you a vacuum cleaner or something.

Yes I will be in there like a walking billboard. I will change my hat and shirt between each round and you will notice a henna tatoo on my forehead that says "Jim's comfort stations" and I am trying to sell a couple spots on our opponents soles of his shoe as well. I've also sold some adds that you may see when the ring cards girls enter and exit the ring but it was cheap because I'm not sure that business will get much exposure. Dennis any further contact you would like to have with me can be made calling my agent. Autographs are $00.67 each with postage and handling. Kenny is charging like $1.85 each.
