2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
Predict the winners of your Golden Gloves franchise and that will represent your franchise in Salt Lake City
Im a Michigan guy but I usually only see the guys during the GG's so I am not sure what weights some will go and if some have turned pro but this is what I have:
112-119 Ernie Garza, Tyler James, Joe Bermudez, Joel Ramos, Javier Mendez
125-132 Joel Florez, Richard Munoz, Raeese Aleem, James Thomas, Ryan Schmidt, Vincent Jennings
141-152 Johnny Garcia, Javonn Barnes, Jose Bernal, William Height, Tyler Fish, Neil Shimmell, Arnold Smith, Morris Young, Adrian Castanon
165 Ben Williams, Casey Cunningham, Germaine McKinney, Nick Kline, Vernon Washington
178-201 Jordan Shimmell, Jarvis Edwards, Kyle McNutt, Stacey Harrington, Alious Griffin
201 plus Ryan O'Neal, Dalshawn Tyler
Im sure I missed some and there is some that will fly under the radar I know that I can't wait for the Gloves to start.

Rocky Mountain Franchise:
Dont know much about our two littler guys at 106 and 112, but from 119 up:
119-Jose Haro (if he's still an amateur; if not, then Vincent Montoya)
125-Depends who's there, I think Matt Ludwig could win it though.
132-Duran Caferro (if he's still at 132, if he's not, then Anthony Lapier)
141-Anthony Lapier (unless Caferro's at 141)
152-Logan Swallow
165-Probably Wesley Padilla or Miguel Flores/Aaron Corona
178-Alex Lopez
201-Sifo Sua
201+-Adrian Farmer

Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
Not a bad list. 201+ - You forgot Matt Maciag. 201 - Stacy and/or Jarvis might box at 178. 178 - D'Qwan Harper (possibly moving down to 165); 165 - Casey Cunningham is now coaching and not competing. You also forgot about Chris Mason, Robbie Wright, and Brandon Lavardaine (sp?). Probably a Walker from Benton Harbor too. I think you will have a couple of other boxers from Battle Creek at 152/165. 152 - Ali Desouky (sp?); I'm sure I'm missing plenty too. If you really can't wait until the gloves start, you should come to Bay City on January 31st. Jordan and Jarvis are scheduled to box each other. There will be other good bouts too. Quite a few good open class clashes. Several that you may see repeated at the GG.Legend616 wrote:Predict the winners of your Golden Gloves franchise and that will represent your franchise in Salt Lake City

Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
have you guys heard of Garret Simon from Puyallup, WA? I beleive he is around 190lbs.
Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
He won the 2008 Nat'l JO at 201 pounds. Some nat'l JO champs struggle in their first year or two in the open class when they get to the national tournaments and face the elite boxers in their weight class.jriley1974 wrote:have you guys heard of Garret Simon from Puyallup, WA? That's what happens when you have the most money.
Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
not only will Jordan and Jarvis go down on Jan. 31 st

Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
It sounds like the Bay City Show is going to have a lot of good bouts. If anyone wants to box Ernie Garza, they need an opponent for him. The opponent would need to be an open class boxer in the 120-132 pound range.

Would they be willing to pay travel for this opponent?
Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
They were willing to pay some travel money for his opponent. Kolya, who do you have in mind?

it seems johnny not going to take fight now so no one in michigan at 141-152 will fight Javonn pinkie barnes untill GG
i still will be there to see the great fight between Jordan and Jarvis

Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
My understanding is Antonio Urista is willing to box him. They boxed during the 2008 West MI GG. I'm sure Leandre White is willing to box him again too. I don't think Johnny Garcia should move up a weight class to box Pinkie.rocabye wrote:rocabye wrote:

They are still looking for an opponent for Ernie Garza.

Duran Caferro may be willing to do it just to get a decent match; he went out to Oregon and fought Troy Wohosky in Medford back in '07.

I passed it along. Caferro just fought last night so I'm not sure if they'll want one again next weekend, and it's kind of short notice, but we'll see.Dennis wrote:You can have his coach contact Bob Arsenault who is the host of the show. Re: 2009 Golden Gloves Predictions
Hi guys!
Last night was Day 1 of the SE TX GG. We had just a few prelims. Mostly was debutants and Novice matches..
Open (17-34 years old) 3-3 minute rounds
125 lbs - Calvin Shepherd (Lion Hearted) over Daniel Guerrero (Bryan C/S)
141 lbs - Roscoe Hill IV (Boss Boxing) over Gustavo Alarcon (Savannah)
141 lbs - Ramiro Esquivel (Lion Hearted) over Rafael Munoz (Puro Azteca)
152 lbs - Damazo Tello (Ray’s) over Rege Harrison (Prince)
152 lbs - Daniel Chacon (Main Gym) over Regis Progias (Savannah) by walkover
152 lbs - Adam Ealoms (Bryan C/S) over Jerry Tristan (Savannah)
152 lbs - Rogelio DeLa Torre (Elite) over Steven Jones (Lion Hearted)
Shepherd returned home from Iraq recently and was stationed at Fort Polk.
Both 141 & 152 are very deep for us locally.
Roscoe was Under-19 national champion and has great height and looked decent last night. Alarcon is cousin of Juan Diaz and should be fighting lighter when in top shape.
Esquivel lost to national USA's runner up Manriquez last year at local GG.
Tello won local USA's last year at 165. Is trained by Ray Ontiveros, and looked MUCH improved.
Chacon is son of pro Fernando Chacon.
Ealoms looked impressive over a seasoned Tristan who quit.
DelaTorre lost to Charlo twin last year at local GG.
At 119 is returning champ Eric Manriquez who'll be challenged by Miguel Flores who is the brother of pro Benjamin Flores.
At 125 is Mercy Manriquez who'll be challenged by Jarren Cochrane. Cochrane's first senior open tournament.
At 132 Eric Fowler is the class but should get stiff test from Darryl Hayes from Savannah gym.
At 141 in addition to Hill, we have Casey Martinez and Hakim Bryant. IMO, our most competitive division.
At 178 we have Cliff Newton as well as Robert Sherman, a Canadian National champion, who now lives in Houston and trains with Kenny Weldon.
At Super Heavy we have Darlington "Cheek" Agha.
Juan Leija is missing the tournament due to injury but should be ready for USAs, and plans to stay amateur through the next Olympic Trials. He lost to Raushee in 2007 in Houston.
SE TX has won TX region GG tournament six years running.. Errol Spence from Dallas area should be the one to beat at 152 in state.
Having graduated some outstanding amateurs recently, Yanez, Belmontes, Perales, Marroquin, Hylon Williams, Hatley, Orozco, Lanard Lane, Charlo brothers, Omar Henry, Gerardo Ibarra, Craig Baker, Josh Garza, the state is still very deep in amateur talent.
Tournament runs through Sunday.

Dennis,
Probably not until Friday. Last year only 3 entered, and two are now pro, Craig Baker and Quantis Graves. The other was from Galveston and as far as I've seen, they dont have a club entered this year, understandable after the year they've had..

My son boxed both Craig and Q. They are both good guys. He might box the next guy to win your GG too. I would rather get a different draw though as the Texas GG champs are usually tough.ringsidemike wrote:Dennis,
