Mundine-Green rematch rumors!

Post by adamheight »

It has widely been anticipated that Australian boxers, Danny Green and Anthony Mundine would square off again in Australia’s biggest fight of 2009, even though Green, the former WBA light-heavyweight and WBC interim super-middleweight champion was retired. After generating the highest PPV audience in Australia’s boxing history and a live gate of 37,000 in their May 2006 fight, many Australian’s wanted to see a return. Green, who retired with a 34-3 record and 23 KOs has been sparring at the Belcatta Gym in Perth over five sessions against Russian fighter Victor Oganov to test his desire and physical condition after over a year outside the boxing ring.

The rumor mill intensified when it was reported that Green, his manager Justin Manokolis and Mundine’s manager, Khoder Nassar were spotted in a Sydney resteraunt last weekend discussing a deal.

Many believe the fight will be announced this week after two time WBA super middleweight champion Mundine takes on Shannan Taylor in Wollongong on Wednesday.

It is expected that Green will have a couple of warm up fights and the re-match will be at 175 pounds, light-heavyweight. This is even though Mundine will be fighting Shannan Taylor at middleweight and is currently ranked #1 by the WBA for Felix Sturm’s middleweight title. Both fighters are expected to secure $3m each for a re-match later in 2009.

if this is true then it means mundine would ignore his position of mandator challenger for sturms WBA mw belt in order to gain 15lbs and earn some money against a guy he has already beaten who hasnt fought in over a year.

what a knob

Surely Green would need a couple of warm up fights before the rematch?

If he did come back what would his ranking be like considering he was a former LHW champion - would he get a title shot at a LHW belt????

yeah the article said he would have a couple warm ups...so thats what makes me think mundine would still go over to germany to face sturm to kill some time whilst waiting for green to prepare against a couple walk overs.
if green lost theres no way he would continue fighting. if he won he might go looking for a title shot. i wonder how mundine would go though packing the weight back on.

Id say he could get an immediate title shot. For his old belt.

What would be nice is if he sticks to his guns and doesn't give Mundine the satisfaction of him coming out of retirement...

I wonder what Golden Boy Promotions thinks of all this. BHop was just on Fox sports talking about how they plan on using Choc and Green doesnt seem to be in the picture.

Id like to see Green win his title back and set up a showdown at 175 with another Champ. Let Mundine fight Sturm and if he wins chase Pavlik or Abraham.

Wont happen though as Mundine-Green is going to make shitloads of cash

Golden Boy have signed Mundine. The way BHop was talking was that they would have him fight in the USA (I think he said "introduce him to the world). Makes you wonder if Green Mundine 2 fits into GBP plans or if they are interested in the match up.

I would like to see that also :TU:

Wouldn't Mundine want to fight for a LHW belt against Green?
He is always talking crap about how he is going to be a world champ in 3 weight divisions
I assume he is taking this fight not only to make a truck load of money but also because he thinks he can win easily...
Should be a different fight a LHW this time ...

If he goes up to 175 lbs, he shouldn't come back down quickly. I really think he should stick to a weight class.

I was just watching Fox sports news and Paul Upton was on talking to the hosts about Green and Darchinyan.
Green is coming back, he looks like fighting Hamden and early next year will fight Mundine.
Paul IMO isn't happy, he stated a couple of times that boxer's who are 36 are past their best.
I kind of agree with him but f#ck it's been pretty boring without Green, and i honestly don't think he would comeback unless he was serious.

I'm at lengths with this one. I am happy to be able to see Green fight again on one hand but on the other, when has it ever been a good thing for a boxer to come out of retirement for monetary reasons? Especially at Green's age?
Whether there's any truth to this next part or not I don't know, but I received information from a guy claiming to be a relo of Green's that he's been offered a fight with Roy Jones Jr after Mundine.
