The Boxing Bulletin is pleased to present a new feature series called Bulletin Classics, where we'll be taking an in depth look at some of the sport's greatest battles.
In this opening installment of the series, Andrew Fruman looks back to December 20, 1946, the night the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson finally got a crack at the welterweight title.
Sugar Ray Robinson pulled himself up onto one knee as referee Eddie Joseph barked out the count. The best fighter in the world, about to finally take his place as champion, was on the verge of a shocking defeat. It was a stunning moment.

Re: Feature Story on Sugar Ray Robinson vs Tommy Bell
get yer history, here! we're talking about the greatest fighter of all time, FINALLY getting a title shot, against a very formidable opponent, under some strange circumstances.
Ray Robinson vs Tommy Bell-prelim bout devino vs. monty
my dad featherweight archie devino fought tommy monte on the same night.it was a 6rd prelim.archie stopped monty in 4rds.ray robinson talked to my dad after the fight which saw both boxers being knocked down several times each.ray told my dad that it was a great fight but my dad had to learn to pace himself.the date was dec.20,1946.the sports writers said it was the best fight ever seen at the old garden. archie boxed the european feather champ ray famechon on dec.1,1950 at MSG.IT WAS TELEVISED.anyone have any ideas about finding the film?been searching for years.KEEP PUNCHING TONY DEVINO
