Re: best 106pds in texas
I will post the full results when I have them, sorry for incomplete and I couldnt find a good thread to put this under...
But here is a quick recap of the SE TX LBC Seniors.
106 Ybarra
112 Juan Leija by w/o
119 Eric Manriquez
125 Jarren Cochrane upset Mercy Manriquez
-very close bout, Cochrane is about 25-1 with only loss coming to E.Manriquez. Mercy was runner up at U.S. Senior Nat. last year. Cochrane has blazing speed, but very raw, has to learn to keep hands up still..
132 Fowler has automatic berth to USAs so didnt compete..
141 10+ entries, so finals are in 2 wks.. Hakim Bryant beat Roscoe Hill IV, Hill is under19 nat. champ.. Hill dominated round 1, but did little in round 2 and next to nothing in round 3. Bryant is in great shape and has great mental makeup. He will face Karim (Casey) Martinez who eeked out a win over Regis Prograis from Savannahs. Martinez had obvious experience advantage even tho he was younger, and Prograis was harder hitter, but has "pro style" and while he probably landed the greater number of punches, he scored fewer points..
152 Rogelio de la Tore
178 Robert Sherman
201 Noel Lingon (hybrid fighter, also competing in amateur MMA)
201+ Agha by w/o

Re: best 106pds in texas
pretty good summary ringside mike, although I didn't think cochrane vs manriquez was very close. I thought cochrane clearly dominated. Also I don't think too many people expected cochran to drop manriquez. That was pretty nice, as was his semifinal stoppage of edgar alarcon.
I could be wrong, but I'm also pretty sure cochrane has fewer than 20 bouts. This kid is special!
I enjoyed the championship bouts sunday they were pretty good.

Re: best 106pds in texas
I agree with you ringside mike the 125 pound finals was close...i would have to clearly give the first round to cochrane the second round to manriquez and the third could have gone either way...the difference here was clearly cochrane hand speed but very good fight.cochrane is defintely a up in coming fighter to watch for.FYI cochrane's only loss came to manriquez yonger brother eric who dominated in his finals match at 119

had miguel flores been eligible able to compete at 119
it would have likely been a different story.
as far as mercy's fight I still think j cochran won all 3 rounds, but mercy seemed to do better as the fight went on

puncher 7
Wow!!!you must hate both of them brothers....Thats your opinion an your entitled to it about mercy an cochran's fight but if ringside mike said, and i said it, an quite of few other netural fans at the fight said as well,an im a netural fan my self,i guess that just shows that you must be a big fan of cochran.like i said before, cochran is defintely a up in coming boxer to watch for but i was just stating my opinion. AN about miguel flores being eligible and things being different at 119 i really dont think so,this was the first time i seen eric in descent shape.in the gg from what i seen he was in pathetic shape, and even looking as bad as he did i never really seen two many good combinations landed from miguel which to me was a dissapointment seening how tired eric was the whole fight.bottom line, eric has a good defense and in shape he is very hard to hit and is a slick and accurate puncher, an miguel in my opinion is a straight forward pressure fighter that needs you to sit still to land that big left to the body of his....

Re: best 106pds in texas
I thought that Mercy had come back with some nice scoring punches after Jarren's great 1st round, and it could have gone his way. It helped that Jarren got to fight in his home gym with alot of NorthShore fans. The judges I talked to had it very close but for Cochrane.
I think Miguel will be an outstanding pro. But at GG, he was dominating because Eric wasn't in shape. Eric still frustrated him with holding, etc. Eric was much better in Ft. Worth and much better last weekend. Maybe he'll be more focused now.
Question, what reason does Mercy have to NOT turn pro? He's out of GG and USAs. Wait for PALs in SA?
Also, I do not fully understand it, but the association used some computer system scoring for the first time. Five judges still used the metal clickers and recorded it on paper, but the scores were entered into a computer and (I think) high and low were thrown out and an average score calculated. I have to clarify this.

Re: best 106pds in texas
Puncher, USAboxing, can you provide any other results/comments? I was in Austin on Saturday.
I know that Raul Marquez Jr. won, keeping his amateur record unbeaten thus far.. Any comments on his fight?
Nolberto Blanco Jr. lost?
Marlen Esparza, USA national champ at 106, won her fight. Sylvia Villalpando went unopposed.
Can you comment on O'Shanique's fight?

Re: best 106pds in texas
Marquez showed a very workmanlike performance, wearing his oponent down with pressure and digging to the body as he trapped his opponent on the ropes. Looking good as usual.
Tony from screaming eagles clearly outboxed Blanco. Blanco just came forward neglecting to use his jab and throwing too wide from too far out. He ate some really hard punches during this fight but showed heart by constantly coming forward anyways. I was really impressed with Tony.
O'shanique simply put on a boxing clinic against Cristobal Morales. He seemed to have his opponent reluctant to come in, and O'shanique just scored points from a distance then moved the whole fight. He looked really good.

Re: best 106pds in texas
Hernandez is from El Campo. About 1.5 hrs SW of Houston..
Usually, the winner of a fight in the SE TX LBC is the one who's hometown is closer to the center of Houston...
-familiarity of judges with the fighter
-better and more frequent sparring with higher population and nearby gyms..

Re: best 106pds in texas
i agree he won the first 2 rounds but he should've finished stronger and not give up the last round so bad so there would be no doubt in the decision.
He would have won that fight had he not pooped out in the last round

Just an update - Hakim Bryant won by walk over vs Karim Martinez on 4/18 as Martinez did not show up for whatever reason, so the gulf roster is now complete

What's up skillz
I agree, I thought Mercy did enuf to catch up in 2&3 to get the win, but I gave up on scoring amateur fights cuz it's hard to count punches w/o a clicker, lol. Remember who's gym they were fighting in, maybe made some difference..
Don't think you'll see a rematch as Mercy is turning pro soon.
And for Jarren, who knows..., if he isnt able to show up at weighins on time, he wont get very far...
