Valero v Prescott On - Bombs Away!

Fresh from having a failed assassination attempt on his wife thwarted, Edwin is putting it on the line in an intruiging fight:

Edwin Valero, THE RING's No. 3-rated lightweight, is close to completing a deal to face Breidis Prescott on July 25 in Mexico, promoter Bob Arum said.

The fight will take place in either Cancun or Toluca, which is near Mexico City, he said.

Valero (25-0, 25 knockouts) is coming off a sensational knockout of Antonio Pitalua to win the vacant WBC lightweight title on April 4 in Austin.

Prescott (21-0, 18 KOs) burst onto the international scene when he knocked out then-unbeaten Amir Khan in one round in September. On Feb. 20, the Colombian, who is THE RING's No. 8-rated lightweight, won by disqualification when Humberto Toledo bit him on the shoulder.

Valero and Prescott are a combined 46-0, with 43 knockouts.

Junior middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will fight on the July 25 card but his opponent has not been secured.

I agree. Edwin has been carefully matched against limited punchers in the past, but Breidis is a big LW. I'll be looking at the odds for this as I fancy an upset.

Yes but the Chavez jr cards are the exception rather than rule. For the main Top Rank cards, the coverage has been excellent IMO

I think it's 'cos Valero stands so wide & waves his chin about in the air like a bloody flag on a flagpole. Prescott has already proved he can flatten an open target & Valero -- Mosquera aside -- has fought a vast array of has-beens, never-weres, obscure Japanese clubfighters & Mexican taxi drivers. I just don't get the hype for the lad, meself. He can bang but has never struck me as anything other than a heavy handed slugger. Jose Luis Ramirez with less tactical aplomb.

Though he (& his handlers) should be congratulated for finally taking on a live body. If he does a number on Prescott I'll give him his due & start calling for Marquez to stand him on his head for twelve rounds.

Valero will KO him! I do not think Valero is given enough credit for the skills he does have. Granted, he's not the most polished fighter, far from it in fact, but I do think he's improving. Lat time out was an impressive win, we can't take that away from Edwin!

I actually think we will see Prescott try to box a bit more, keep things at a distance. After all, he's the one with the height & reach advantages.

Precott is the harder hitter of the two 13 KNOCKOUTS in 21 bouts

opposed to Valeros 6 KNOCKOUTS in 25 bouts

ive not seen enough of either to give a good shout to who wins, both have fought there fair share of bums & both can bang so i guess who ever wins will be the one with the better chin/lands first

I think so too. Valero has a lot more skill than people give him credit for. Unfortunately, at the moment, his skill tends to show in sparring rather than fights. I think that's due to the level of opposition and because he wants to be entertaining.

Could go either way but I'm slightly leaning towards Prescott because of his height and reach and the fact Valero is so wild. Even in the Kahn fight Prescott came out like he was going to box and only pounced with his bombs once Kahn was rocked.

I think he has the patience to wait for an opening, of which there should be plenty!!

I was about to make the same comment. Valero's Ko's are what his legend is made of 25 fights, 25 KO's only 6 of his opponents have made it out of the first round. Maybe that's where the confusion is.
