Referee Robinson, a late sub for Eddie Smith who had officiated the tragic McCarty-Pelkey bout that morning, stated no decision would be given in light of Luther McCarty's death; Welsh outweighed Scaler by ten pounds and was clearly better. The Edmonton Daily Bulletin reported that Robinson was inexperienced as to local "clean-break" rules, placing Scaler at a disadvantage.

Hyland was a late sub for Champion Joe Bayley who had broken his hand in a bout with Tom Moore. Scored by 4 ringside judges and the referee: 3 for Scaler and two a draw. Both came in over the expected limit of 133. "...the slowest, most uninteresting bout seen in Edmonton in years..."Edmonton Daily Bulletin. Lots of clinching and foul work, Hyland was constantly hitting on the breaks.

Denny's seconds threw up the sponge. "The crowd considered the fight a fake, although it was plain from the start that Scaler was the better man. Denny was knocked down three times and took the count. Until nearly midnight it looked as if the fight would be called off, as box receipts were only $268, while a purse of $500 had been guaranteed. Scaler refused to fight for less than $500. At last, after collecting $27, they were persuaded to enter the ring with the result above stated." Spokane Spokesman-Review
