Fonfara went down from a straight left hand midway through the opening round. He got up at the count of two and action continued. Stevenson hurt Fonfara again seconds later and the challenger backpedaled and stayed on the defensive for the remainder of the round. A cut opened on Fonfara's right eyelid in round three. Stevenson sent Fonfara to a knee in round five from a left to the body. Fonfara was up quickly. In the sixth, another left hand to the body hurt Fonfara and sent him back into the ropes. Stevenson came forward looking for the knockout, but Fonfara was able to tie him up and keep his feet. To his credit, Fonfara was game and started to land more against a tiring Stevenson in the seventh and eighth rounds. A right hand 30 seconds into the ninth round surprisingly dropped Stevenson and had him bleeding from the nose by the end of the round. Stevenson appeared recovered in the tenth and eleventh and action was paused temporarily in each round to allow Fonfara a few seconds to recover from punches that strayed low. The two exchanged punches in a good-action final round and the crowd gave the fight a standing ovation.
