1931 Al Roth of the Unionport AC won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves' open championship vs. Johnny DeFoe of the LI Moose Club at bantamweight. Roth was also a leading contender for lightweight honors in the mid 1930's--he was ranked as high as the 6th ranked lightweight in the world by The Ring' in February of 1936. He fought a very credible battle for the Lightweight Championship of the World losing in fifteen rounds to Champion Tony Canzoneri in October of 1935--he never got another shot at a world title.
