Al Shubert was the bantamweight champion of New England and operated the Shubert Athletic Club in New Bedford, Mass.
In September of 1917, Shubert applied for an exemption from being drafted into the army for World War I claiming that his wife and other relatives were dependent upon him. He request, however, was denied on the basis that Shubert also owned a poolroom and variety store which, according to the board, would provide enough revenue to support the family while he was away. On October 19th, 1917 he left to begin training with the army. Shubert returned six months later and resumed his boxing career until June 1918. On July 30th, 1918, he and 25 other men were bused to Syracuse, New York, where they were to prepared for deployment. Shubert was out of the ring until February of 1919.
In 1923, Shubert floored and defeated then-featherweight champion Johnny Dundee, but the title was not at stake.
