Results
“Al Valentine was handed the four-round decision over Maxie Rosen in the opener. The crowd thought Rosen won all the way, but referee Holborow ruled otherwise.” – Ken Bojens, San Diego Union, Saturday, February 13, 1937
Rosen Proves Just Flop“Max Rosen (142) of Detroit, who came here with an impressive scrapbook and a glib tongue, turned out to be a sad flop in his initial local start. He fought a green, awkward strong boy named Al Valentine (142) of this city and won all but three of the four rounds of their opener. Valentine scored enough points with a straight left to the face to stock a needle factory. Rosen showed absolutely nothing but an unwillingness to fight. He took the first frame and folded. Curly Morgan did the announcing.” - Tom Akers, Sports Editor, San Diego Tribune, Saturday, February 13, 1937
“Holborough absolutely butchered the decision in the opener when he gave Alex Valentine the decision over Maxie Rosen, newcomer from Detriot, Rosen took the fight three and split the fourth only to see Holborough pull his ‘Justice is Blind’ act.” – Leslie Shoemaker, San Diego Sun, Saturday, February 13, 1937
