Wambsgans was the 1912 United States amateur lightweight champion. He later became a referee in the American South, working in a variety of cities in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Wambsgans spent his last 20 years living in Biloxi, Mississippi where he operated a big bakery and was the manager of the Marine Room at the Buena Vista Hotel.
