Al Young was born Feb. 25, 1895, in Bartley, Nebraska. His family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when he was 10.

Young took up boxing at age 16 and fought a couple of years as an amateur in Tulsa. He reported that his first pro bout was at age 18 (circa 1913), when he got defeated a Paul Graham in five rounds. Young boxed as a pro in Tulsa and other Oklahoma towns, then toured Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas and Texas, and other southern states, before moving west to Montana where he became a barber. His first bout in the West was a draw-12 at Driggs, Idaho with Lee Morrissey. Young soon settled in Driggs.

Morrissey had gotten the attention of Ogden, Utah promoter Eddie Dallas, who matched him with Pat Gilbert ('Young Gilbert') for Nov. 15, 1916. Young accompanied Morrissey to Ogden. But Morrissey became ill and Young took his place on a few minutes' notice. Young was a hit with the Ogden crowd and he had found a new home. He had seven more bouts after that, up to early February 1917. By then, he claimed, he had fought some 60 bouts with only two decisions against him.
