Alberto Sandoval lost to Eliseo Cosme 120 lbs by TD at 1:26 in round 4 of 10

  • Date: 1978-02-02
  • Location: Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA
  • Judge: 28-29

"Alberto 'Superfly' Sandoval, who recently invaded the bantamweight division, lost his undefeated record on a "technical decision" at 2:06 of the 4th round at the Olympic Auditorium to Mexico's Eliseo Cosme. Seems as though the three officials all had Cosme ahead when, in the 4th, a thudding clash of heads left the Mexican with gushers on his cheek and the bridge of the nose. On the advice of the ringside physician the bout was called to a halt. The verdict stunned the crowd of 4,227, which had 'Superfly' easily in front and had been anticipating no worse than a technical draw. But since the opinions that count had Cosme in the lead, there was no choice according to State Commission rules." -International Boxing, June 1978 issue

  • The California State ruling on when a fight is terminated on a butt reads, if a fighter is ahead at the time he is injured by a butt, he wins on a technical decision. If he is behind on points when injured by a butt, he gets a technical draw.
  • Gate - $23,829

Post-fight comment

  • "Cosme will probably want $1,000,000 to get in the ring with my kid again." -Jackie McCoy, Sandoval's manager. However, despite his doubts, they were rematched the following month.
