"A rematch - this time with the state featherweight title at stake - loomed today for young Tony Alvarado and defeated champion Alex Benitez. Alvarado, 125 1/2, Pasadena, Calif., dropped Benitez, 126 1/2, San Jose, Calif., with a right to the head in the 2nd round Thursday night and went on to score a decisive, unanimous decision in their non-title 10 rounder at the Olympic Auditorium. Alvarado was in command all the way in the rugged contest and had Benitez in trouble in several rounds. Benitez, despite a badly puffed left eye, rallied gamely in the final round to stagger Alvarado, who finished the match with a cut on his nose and one by his left eye." -United Press International
