Nino Valdes 209 lbs lost to Alex Miteff 205 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"The manager of big Nino Valdes will be ordered to substantiate officially his fixed-fight charges, made after young Alex Miteff had won a split decision over Valdes Friday night in their gory heavweight battle at MSG. It was a grand fight, in which 23 year old Alex forced the action, although he was fighting through a mouthful of blood and through eyes that were swollen practically shut at the finish. Both Alex and big Nino were drenched from Miteff's 3/4 inch nose gash." -United Press.

Official scorecards:

  • Referee Teddy Martin: 6-4 Miteff
  • Judge Nick Gamboli: 6-3-1 Valdes
  • Judge Harold Barnes: 5-4-1 Miteff

  • Unofficial AP scorecard: 5-5 (but had Miteff ahead on points due to a big 1st round where Miteff staggered Valdes)
  • The AP polled 16 boxing writers at ringside and it was reported that 9 favored Miteff.
  • It took seven stitches to close the wound on Miteff's nose.
