In 2004, after he had begun his professional career with a loss in a title bout, Assanov won a bronze medal at the CISM Military Boxing Championships held in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. In 2005 he competed in the same tournament, in Pretoria, South Africa, losing in the semifinals to the eventual winner from China. Assanov, then apparently resumed his pro career again, and was stopped in the 6th round of another regional title bout.
